Ok I have a 91 ranger custom at least that's what's the fenders say. It's a 2.3 5 speed 4x4 std cab short bed. Now the problem 3rd gear grindes everytime going in the only time I can get it in third is when stopped. Now finding a 2.3 manual trans for 4x4 is next to impossible unless I pay an arm and a leg. Now I can pretty much say there isn't anything I haven't pulled apart on a ranger but the trans and tcase how hard would it be to pull it apart and rebuild it myself.

The worst part of taking the trans apart and rebuilding it is that you need a press to get the gears off, but you shouldn't need to take the gears off the shafts. You should be able to do just the syncros from what you said.

That makes the worst part of the job finding that angle to get the main shaft apart and out.

That's what I was thinking is that the syncro was bad. Ok so then where would I be able to find a manual to take me step by step to replace them and where would I find parts

Ebay is the cheapest place for parts, I got a bearing and synchro kit for like $175 shipped. Some of the gears have to come off to change the synchro's and bearings while you are in there but I think I did mine without a press... See if you can get ahold of AllanD as he's in PA and knows those things like the back of his hand...
