'83 drivetrain in an '85 Ranger?

I got my "new" Ranger about a month ago. The guy selling it had it advertised as a 1983 Ranger, but when I took the title to have it put into my name it had 1985 on the title. I just figured the kid didn't know. Now I was reading 1985 Ranger had FI. This one doesn't. I'm thinking it might have an '83 drivetrain in an '85 truck. I can't get back in touch with the PO to verify.

Anything else I can look at to get a better handle on just what I have? (I've looked at the stickers, but he had spray painted over them...). I guess the VIN would be the next step, but will that tell me enough?

It's a 4X4 with a four cylinder, four speed.

Which four cylinder? IIRC the 2.0 was carbed up until the 87-88 timeframe.

IIRC the 2.0 remained carbed until late in the 80s, the 2.3 went to TBI around 1985, which looks very much like a carb at first glance. The V-6 would have still been carbed in 85.

give us the VIN minus the last 5 digits and we can tell you what it has/had

The motor should have a number stamped on it as well to tell the year.

I think it is the 2.0, so you probably hit it -and I remember my '85 BII V6 was carbed too. I didn't realize the 2.0 was still carbed on the 85s. I should read the FAQs a bit better I guess!

Check the tenth digit in the Vin # starting from Left to Right. If its a D then its a 83 model. If its a F then its a 85 model.
