I was thinking of getting a locker and i remembered that there is a tag on my rear end of the truck and i was told ALL 8.8 are 28 splines and my tag said it's a 27 8.8 and some other numbers. So then i looked for a locker for the 27 splines and i could not find any. So whats the deal on the truck rear end ? I thought they were all 28's? it's a 94 4x4 4.0 e-cab. Now the other question i had is what spline is my front end? i saw 27 of the aussie site and i just wanna make sure before i buy the aussie front.

:icon_confused:

Thanks. Happpy New year to all.

Not sure what context the numbers are but all ranger installed 8.8s are 28 splines except for FX4s they have 31 splines explorers have 31 splines too. the numbers on the tag will tell you. The top set of numbers tells you the manufacture info the bottom set tells you the gear ratio (first 3 ex: 3 73 for open 3.73 gears or 3L73 for traction lok 3.73 gears) the second 2 tell you the size 75 for 7.5. 88 for 8.8. They do not have the spline numbers on the tag. any other questions take a look at this http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html

The problem is there should be a 3 in front of that 27, usually gets hidden under the mounting bolt. That would make your gear ratio a 3.27.

Alright, That makes alot more sence now. Thanks. Is 31" tire bad with 3.27 gears? The motor like to be at 55 on the highway at 1550rpms(+/-) . Around town it feels like it takes off slow. Would doing 33" tire be a really bad idea and asking for problems. Im going to be doing a locker in the front when i do u-joints and might in the rear. Would i be asking for problems with the front locker or would that be fine or how about both with3.27?

3.27s are awful with stock tires. Don't use OD, I'll guarantee you'll get better MPG, I could get nearly 2MPG better in my sploder by not using OD, it had 3.27s with stock 235-75-15s...

3.27 is a bad idea with 33s. you need atleast 4.10s if you want to have any power at all

i ran 3.27s and 31s and got 18 on the highway but it sucked to have to down shift for an hill that is sort of steep. that was will 4.0 5 speed. then i swapped in 3.73s and 31s and it was a hell of a difference

How would adding a locker to the front end be? Would it be safe or just a bad idea and better to just go with a rear locker? This is my DD to.
