Thanks. I made it to the coast without seeing any real snow.
And now I'm thinking the whine may be tire whine....duh. But it is hard to do any diagnosis without a shop or dry roads.

And I got 13.34 l/100Km or 21.2 mpg Canadian, 17 mpg US.

Wait.... are Canadian miles and/or gallons different than US miles and gallons? Or did a joke just go sailing over my head....

I need to know.

Today I installed the Shiftster from my race truck into this one. I'm going to run in 2wd and I have chains, real ones, to strap on if needed. 4x4 will be a last resort until I can look closer at the system.
Also tried to get the spare out from under but someone installed a homemade hitch receiver that prevents dropping the spare all the way. I'll carry an extra spare in the box [with canopy].
And finally I checked the front diff and T-case fluids and they are dirty but full.
I'm heading off on a 2400 km trip starting tomorrow morning.
Didn't you buy two or three of those from me about 5 years ago?.....:D

Yes, Canadian and American gallons are different sizes. Way back when, the American government wanted more money, so decided that making the gallon smaller would bring more taxes. So they made it 20% smaller.

My memory fails me more and more as I get older. Remind me, please. Shiftster or tire chains?

So I left Pemberton this morning after 3" of snow fell. I crawled under and put it in 4*4. Locked in the hubs and started driving. There is a definite whine and the steering is really darty. Like it doesn't know which direction to go. Unlock the hubs and the steering is normal and the whine is mostly gone.

At the time, which I think was soon after confederation, the government was broke. I don't know what other possibilities for revenue existed at the time. I'm sure they did the best they could and that there were people pissed off. All governance is a balancing act and no one gets it right all the time. Like Trump for example, he rubs me the wrong way and I would never vote for him, but some of his policies I agree with.

Well to be accurate, up until 1824 there was no "US" gallon, the newly formed US of A used the British measurements, ounces, pints, quarts, and gallons.
It was the British that changed to the "Imperial" system in 1824

US gallon(and British prior to 1824) is 128 ounces, 8 US pints, or 4 US quarts, from "old England"

Imperial gallon was changed and so were pints and quarts to a new "standard", Imperial standard.
A pint was now 20 ounces instead of 16, more beer in the glass, lol.
Making an Imperial gallon 160 ounces

US of A didn't change, so our measurement become the "US gallon, pint and quart" by default.
Like OBD became OBD1 when OBD2 was introduced :)
1 Imperial Ounce is .96 US ounce, so almost the same

And it could have been the cost of switching over to Imperial measurements was the reason the US didn't change, new country, and not a "have to have" expense.

When Metric was introduced as world-wide standard, and fuel is sold by Liters, US also didn't follow suit, but not a cost issue, just stubbornness, lol.

I still vividly remember back in '72 at our high school when some LA school district guys came with about 400 little yellow tape measures, and spent the day visiting all the shop classes and handing them out to all the students after a 15 minute spiel claiming that America was gonna 'Go all metric' inside of two years, and that we needed to get ready for it asap. None of us had a frickin clue what he was talking about, let alone how to read these things. But we all took our tapes (I was in wood shop at the time), smiled politely and waitedfor them to leave. Twenty minutes later half of those tapes were in the trash can.....with our shop teacher being the first to do so. And that was the last time the metric system was brought up in our shops........

Canada has been metric since about that time^^^^. I can work in both. But construction is still all imperial measurements here, well...., residential is.

I still think in imperial (edit out metric)...when I actually do think...

I'm always converting celsius temperatures to fahrenheit to tell whether I should feel hot or cold or just right...

I want to sue the government for the trauma they caused us Canadian kids...
