So are you going to swap in a manual case? That would seem the logical thing to do if your worried about reliability. You can wire the lights up to work with a manual case, I did it on my 89.

When I got my manual case from the yard they had cut the harness for the lights. I had two wires about a foot long coming off the t-case. The connector is already prewired under the hood for a manual case. In my case on my Bronco II it was on the driverside fender close to the master cylinder. It was the only plug NOT in use with 2 wires in it. I just took some 14guage wire and connected them together with the harness on the case. I can take some pics if I need to clarify a little.

The exact locations of the empty harness may differ with model year changes.

I think what you're describing is different than what I was thinking... You're talking about the instrument cluster lights, not the pushbutton switch lights, right? Your BII had an electric TC but the cluster lights weren't wired?

Hmm when I swapped my 88 to a manual it already had the correct plug underneath it to accept the manual t-case shift light, I just had to put the bulbs in the dash...

In My original post, I was refering to the dash lights not the button lights.

I will probably be doing a manual swap some day, I just don't have money right now. The local yard wants 130 bucks, I think it was, for a manual 1354.

Id say thats a pretty good deal. A rebuilt one is like a grand isnt it. I was tickled pink when i found out my new (used) 1350 was only $85 with my discount ($100 for everyone else).

I got my 1350 from a local yard for $29.95!

The dash indicator lights and the lights next to the push buttons are wired in with the electric shift motor. When I wired up the lights the way I described BOTH sets of lights lit, the ones on the console and the ones next to the buttons. But then I took the push buttons out.

Hope that makes sense.
