Gentlemen,

I recently started loosing coolant and fouling the plugs on two cylinders in my 99 4.0L 4x4 Ranger . The truck would also run rough and smoke a bit at startup. With the help of a friend and these forums we determined that this was a bad head gasket or a cracked head.

I just finished pulling the heads and dropping them off at the machine shop for milling and a valve job, however in the meantime I would like to clean the injectors while they are out of the truck.

The only problem I'm having is seperating the fuel injection supply manifold from the lower intake. I have removed the bolts that are suppose to hold it in place but it just won't budge. I still have the fuel rail attached but I have disconnected the fuel line. I think the two parts are just held together by the old gasket. Is there something I can spray that will help loosen it all up?

Thanks!

I don't know if there's anything you can spray on it, but when I took mine off last week, I just removed the 6 studs (you need a female torx socket) that held the fuel rail to the lower intake manifold and just pulled the rail off. It wasn't easy, but it shouldn't be that hard.

I have a 2000 OHV, so they should be the same.

Cheers,
Aaron

That's an E-7 Torx socket, FYI.

The fuel rail is only held on by tight O-rings and maybe the gasket now. You can try to spray some Kroil in there, perhaps. It's a penetrating lubricant. But the O-rings do fit tightly and it will take some effort to separate these.

Why can't you clean them inside the fuel supply manifold? If you're planning on disassembling them, you're likely to break them all unless you have the correct tools.
