THE problem with a 4.0 SOHC is that they are ALL EEC5 and that alone should intimidate you.
The fact is there are so many interlocking systems
(a loose gas cap will trip a check engine light) that
you'd be forced to retrofit onto your Explorer to make it impractical.
That and the fact that to get those extra 50-ponies the 4.0 basically loses it's bottom end balls.
Where the 4.0OHV is really nice is below 2grand.
Kiss that goodbye if you switch to a SOHC.
all things considered it's actually far easier to switch to a V8.
I'm not saying it's impossible.
I am saying that "practical" is something you need to determin for yourself,
but you need to be properly informed to make that choice.
"informed" is something you really need to achieve yourself as my giving you
the answers... well my answers work for me, they may look different to you.
Frankly I've already up-converted my '87 Ranger to a /93 4.0 and
thus I currently have a vehicle that's electronically different from
yours in what ammount to trivial ways. and I say that only to make
the point that if I really wanted a vehicle with a 4.0 SOHC I'd buy
one with that engine already in it
Of course I can't afford a case of beer right now, so you may factor that into
your estimation of the value of my advice...
