4.0 manual to 4.0 auto wiring KEEPING MANUAL TRANS!!!

ok so my 4.0 ohv blew and im gunna put another 4.0 in. i found a steel on a 4.0 that had an automatic trans behind it. im keeping my 5 speed manual transmission so i will have to convert the block to accept a manual (change flywheel and pilot barring) but my question is is the wiring on the 4.0 ohv's for auto trannies the same as the wiring for the 4.0 ohv's with manual trannies???? i dont want to get the automatic motor in and find out the wiring harness is different because if it is ill just wait to find a engine that fits a manual.

Put your flywheel and a clutch behind it and bolt it in.
Both you have, R&R as necessary.

You should be more worried about harness changes from year to year, then from auto to manual.

Swap your harness onto the "new" motor. It should take all of about 15 minutes when they are sitting there side-by-side.

wouldnt one from a year close to mine work? like a 95 or 96? i mean i thought all ohv's had the same harness

91-92 didnt have a cam sync.
93-94 the computer is under the brake booster.
95 the computer move to the firewall, above the engine.
96+ is 104 pin OBDII computer.


The DPFE changed sometime in those years. (different connector)


There are a lot of changes over the years, so yes some harnesses interchange. If you dont know what one matches up exactly, just swap yours onto the replacement engine.

ok ill just swap mine to the replacement engine... that means that ill have to cut all the wires originally on the replacement engine in order to splice my harness to it right?

unplug your wiring harness from your engine, unplug the harness from the new engine, install your wiring harness on new engine. If some sensors on new engine will not accept your wiring harness, swap them out for the ones on the old engine, there should be no cutting of wires whatsoever, it should be a bolt in, plug in installation.
