if i switch my 3.0 auto from 3.45 to 3.73 will it be that big of a difference in a dd/ offroader? my end result after lift will probably be 31's but for right now ive got 235-70-15

if you put 31's on after the gear change I can't imagine there being much difference than it is now. if you're going with 31's I'd recommend 4.10's and I would also recommend having a shop put in your gears. unless you've done it before or you're confident you can set them right you'll break them.

Being it a 2wd I would just find a complete rear end to swap in with 4.10's.

i was thinkin about deffinantly 8.8, i wouldnt mind a fx axle, but i cant find one in my price range. if i went 4.10 would it kill my mileage? also what all do i have to change with switching to a 8.8?

If you do change up to the 31" with the 4.10's, may not change at all. Tread pattern and tire width would affect it more. Change? Just drop it in, do the normal checking of u-joints. Not all 8.8's come with the 10" brakes so get them also.

If you're doing 31s with a 3.0 auto go straight to 4.56. The 3.0 can handle the extra revs and you will be much happier. I have 31s and 4.10s and it's pretty gutless at the moment.

I consider MINIMUM gear for a 3.0 with 235's to be 4.10's

Dunno, I ran 235's on my 3.0L Ranger with 3.73s and was plenty happy with it. Of course, I also had the 5-speed....

But I also beat the snot out of the poor truck - I was running it like it was an F-250 a lot of the time. When I get around to fixing 'er up again, she'll have a much easier life now that I finally got a full size....
