Good evening,
I have the axle code 95, does this mean I have 28 or 31 spline?

Reason I am asking is because I am considering the upgrade to a Limited Slip Diff.

Well, turns out I didn't "please read here before posting" 😅. I saw a different thread and it seems it's likely 28.

Yeah, only some very select FX4 level 2 Rangers got the 31 spline, all the rest are 28 spline...

Is it easy/possible to convert? I hear the 2010 and 2011 Rangers had the larger 3.25” outer diameter.

OK, here is the skinny, only the 2002 FX4, and 2003-2007 FX4 Level II’s came with 31 spline Torsen rear axles as part of the package, most if not all were 4.10
It was Optional in 2008/09 Level IIs

2010-12 Rangers have 3.25" outer tubed because of rear Disc brakes, not because of 31-spline or Limited Slip
Not sure there was a 31-spline after 2009 Level II

Swap out ring and pinion on your Code 95 to 4.10 and the guts/case to limited slip
If you have a 2010 then it has rear disc brakes, so if swapping whole axle you would lose that
The torsen 31 spline never came with disc brakes

I don’t think the 2010-2011 axle can be upgraded to 31 splined axles. The bearings are different due to the larger diameter axle shafts and I don’t know if the bearings would fit in the axle.

The axle lengths are different since the 31 splined axles are drum brakes and the ‘10-‘11 axles have disc brakes.

Also, sensor locations are different. The ‘10-‘11 axles have splines for the ABS/speed/traction/stability control sensors at the end of the axle shafts near the hubs. I believe the FX4 uses a splined ring in the differential.

I’m sure there are other things I’m missing.

Well, I found this, so I might not need to make the conversion. I was looking towards converting to 31 because I didn’t find any Limited Slip 8.8 with 28 splines. I was going to pair it with a 4.10:1 ring and pinion set and a bearing/hardware kit. The one I was looking at before was a Ford Performance 31 spline.

I think the Tru Track is the worm gear LSD model. A good one to go with. No clutch discs to wear out and you don’t have to worry about the additive.

Torsen sells a worm gear LSD as well.

Everything else I’ve seen is clutch packs.

Aren’t those for off-roaders? My build is a street truck.

A limited slip has better road manners for a vehicle that doesn't go off road. A locker will give better grip but can cause control issues in the right conditions that an LSD is less likely to cause but not impossible. For a pavement or gravel road only vehicle, an LSD is usually the better choice. But there are applications where a locker does make sense. Usually specialized cases but there are times when they make sense.

Technically, 31 splines are easier on 2010-11 axles as they already gave the larger axle bearing (1559) <One could just shorten & respline an Explorer or F-150 axle>. But if you don't have aftermarket power - V-8 or boost/aren't hard on parts, 31 spline axles aren't really necessary.

V8 Mustangs ran 28 spline for decades.

Lighter but with higher hp aspirations than the average Ranger owner.

Thanks for all the help. I’m also trying to find out how many splines the end of the driveshaft is, I don’t know the official term haha. Reason is all of the ring and pinion kits are either 28 or 30 spline.

I think all OEM 8.8" axles are 30 splines on pinion aka pinion splines (1.312" diameter, 30* pressure angle)

28 splines are Ford 9" OEM (1.220 " diamter, 45* pressure angle). Aftermarket for 9" has lots of options.
