Over the last while I have been looking at the pros and cons for all the different models. The great thing is so many parts change very easily. I am taking my 2000 ford ranger that is a 2wd with torsion bar truck and putting in the 4wd parts I think will work best. My truck is a manual trans standard cab short bed.

Transfer case from a 97 5.0 explorer
Rear driveshaft from a 03 ranger (had to change front yoke to make work with tcase)
Front driveshaft from a 95 ranger ( that way the cv style at the tcase is gone)
Front dif from a 98 explorer ( gears do max my old they are 4.10)
Cv axels from the 98 explorer ( doing this to eliminate the vacuum hubs of the rangers)
Front knuckles from a ranger think it was the 03( put the explorer wheel bearings in it )
Front rotors came with knuckles they where new just turned the rust off save a $

Any questions let me know the build starts this Saturday the 4th pictures will post as we go.

Also helping (aka use of garage) 99supercab

sounds like a good project but i dont think a 97 5.0 t case will work unless you already have a v8 or an adapter.

I don't think any V8 expos came with a manual case. Im sure not any came without "Control Trac" AWD.

I've never heard of a non awd v8 explorer, I don't think they were ever produced, but my bet is someone swapped the manual case in, possibly after the awd case went, for better fuel mileage, low range, or it was just what they had around.

I'm all for doing another one. And just for anyone that is wondering the price on this build. The used parts transmission, transfercase, driveshafts, front diff, cv, and steering knuckles came in at $500. The new wheel bearings, ujoints, fluids, and misc. came in around $400. Now the trasmission we had to buy half way through had a tcase on it so there about $100 back plus my old transmission is worth about $200. So after all that said this build cost around $600 total after everything is said and done. And don't worry there's more to come on this truck.
