Well my 2.3 might have finally given up the ghost, yesterday I smelled burning oil so I opened the hood and I found a whole layer of over everything after letting it set for two hours I checked the oil and there was barely any on the dipstick. so I filled it up, and kept an eye on the gauge on the way home, when I got home I popped the hood to see another new layer of oil on the intake tube and oil dripping off the hoods insulation. Fast forward to today I started it to pull it in the garage and as soon as I started it I had a big cloud of blue smoke when I pulled it into the garage I crawled underneath to see if it was just oil burning off of something.... it wasn't, it was coming out of the tail pipe.
:bawling:
my father is suspecting rings but that wouldn't spray it all over the engine compartment would it? :dunno:

good news is I have a whole new layer of rust preventative.
bad news is my daily driver is down and my job is in the next town.

No, rings wouldn't...but it could be blowing out the dipstick hole...or a leaky pcv or valve cover gasket...

Mine was blowing out of the dipstick tube and it looked much worse than it was...but the blue smoke...it's sucking it into the intake somehow...could be through the pcv return...check out the pcv valve...and remove the return tube to see if you've got oil in the tube (which leads right into the intake)...

Thanks for the reply, I'll go check the PCV and tube but the majority of the oil is on the exhaust side of the motor. would the PCV drain the crankcase in about 25 miles?

Hope you find it something simple...

A few other things to check _) compression (this tells you if the rings/valves are good)...a simple compression test does not tell all...so if you can do a leak-down test it gives you a bit more info...

read up on it here...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leak-down_tester

If you haven't changed the oil recently, try that also...I know that losing oil and changing oil are similar, but changing, topping up to proper level and then seeing how long (how many miles/hours) it takes to drop a liter...

Check the bottom of the timing belt cover for oil...a leaky camshaft seal can lose oil very rapidly...and spread it around the engine compartment when that $hit hits the fan...literally!

If it's not the cam seal then it may be excessive blow-by caused by valves or rings...which essentially cause excessive pressure in the block causing the oil to be forced out...rather rapidly sometimes.

Yay first day I don't work! We'll do a compression check today along with my oil filter and some of my oil since most of it is new and we'll check over the timing cover along with the valve cover gasket

I just hope its not the rings:sad:

I didn't get to check the compression or change the oil we got extremely busy :bawling:
BUT i did find out that the oil cap wasn't sealing correctly and letting oil blow out there. we fixed that and the oil wastage has gone down alot it still uses a little oil and you can smell it burning but it isn't nearly as bad as what it was or what we thought.
