1988 trany ???

My brother has a 88 ex cab ranger 2.9 and needs a auto tranny w/od for it it is auto 4x4 im sure it it a A4LD can he just get a tranny out of any other 82 to 88 ranger ex cab or is it a special tranny in it

The trans needs to be for a 4x4 or you need the tailshaft and transfer adapter which takes trans teardown to install.

I don't think that the electric transfer case will care if the trans is manual or automatic, it is controlled via the button console and the control box in the dash.

Refit to a manual is fairly straight forward. I'm finishing one up now,

the trans needs to be from an 88 or 89 ranger or an 88 b2 to be a direct swap. the electronics are different. the valve body out of any other earlier years would need changed. after that the shifter hook up is different.
