2013 ish MTD yard machines 2 stage with a 208CC "powermore" engine.

Anyways, its shifted by a cable that pulls a lever that is hooked to some kind of goofy slide thst moves along the axle.
How it works beyond that im not really sure.
Either way, the damn thing is so hard to shift that it broke the cable last year.
Im putting a new cable on, but i need it to shift properly. Im wondering if i need to grease where it slides on the axle? But i dont know and i dont wanna dick it up.
Any ideas?
