The last post in that thread had a guy retaining the stock ECU and doing the duraspark.Then the switch should work.

Nope starting in 85 Ford went to that A4LD mess...apparently too many C5's were working too well so they had to computerize the transmission and add overdrive to add multiple failure points . My 84 Ranger had the C5 did great towing a 14' camp trailer all over the country.Are you sure its an a4ld? IIRC the 84 came with a C5 ( 3 speed auto ). The earlier years a4ld trans lockup you can control with a spst switch. No need to keep the cpu.
