First of all check all of the fuses and relays, I believe the 4x4 is a fuse, should be labeled in the fuse box. If that isn't the problem there is a 4x4 module in the cab somewhere (can't remember where) do a search as there's tons of 4x4 issues on here with this problem that tells where everything is and can help you diagnose the problem completely.

Sounds like it may be the switch itself being bad. The actual electronics module that controls the 4x4 I don't think goes bad very often so the switch in the dash may just need replaced, or may just need the contacts cleaned even.

sounds like when the button was bad on mine... the overhead console, go grab one of those from the junkyard... or use a test light and see if power is making it thru the switch.

my first electric shift 4x4 had an issue like that. i was gonna test the switch, and found that it was just not plugged in all the way. after plugging it in i found that there is a delay of a couple seconds before it shifts. hope this helps!

Here, I'll give you a copy of the electric shift Transfer case diagnostics manual.

http://www.inetlink.ca/a31ford/xfer-case.pdf

it's about 1/2 a meg in size, so it might be a bit when it opens (you'll need a PDF reader like acrobat to view it).
