1989 Bronco II Caged Chop Top
Some Bronco II modifications are easy to overlook, but a chopped-top Bronco II with a custom roll cage is hard to miss. This 1989 Ford Bronco II 4×4, owned by forum member “smash9002,” is a great example of how enthusiasts have transformed the compact Ford SUV into a serious off-road machine.
This Bronco II originally caught my attention when it appeared in the Ranger Station forums back in 2008. What really stood out to me was the custom cage and the chopped roof. The combination of the chopped top and exposed cage gives this Bronco II a completely different look while also giving the build a serious off-road personality. It’s a great example and deserved to be preserved here as inspiration for other Bronco II builders.
Underneath the shortened body is a 4.0L V6 backed by a 5-speed manual transmission, along with a Dana 35 TTB front axle and Ford 8.8-inch rear axle. A Skyjacker 6-inch suspension lift with extended radius arms provides the additional clearance needed for the 33-inch Pro Comp Xterrain tires.
The original forum build thread contains additional photos and information, but much of the original history is now nearly two decades old. This page preserves the truck and its custom cage so that this unique Bronco II build—and the ideas it can inspire—aren’t lost to the internet.
