Bought a '97 Ranger, 2.3L, 5spd 8 mo's ago. Just found out that it had a '98 2.5L put in it. We've had emissions code problems and now can't even drive it in Georgia. Seems the Cardone rebuilt ECM is incorrect unit.

Problem: I was told that Ford has no records past 2000 of motor/vehicle codes which Cardone goes by. And they list 8 different units on their web site. I'd rather not buy all 8 ECM's. Any ideas?

Buy an ecm for a 2000 2.5 ranger 5 speed or 2001.

Wonderful list! But...the first shop (of 3) said to replace the ECM. When I pulled it out, I said, "it's not a good sign that yellow ink is scribbled across unit". From a junkyard obviously. So no original sticker that I remember and now it's got a Cardone rebuilt ECM in there based on the door sticker code. Which is wrong as it's a '98 engine. The '98 2.5L engine has 8 different ECM's listed at Cardone.

Maybe Cardone has a human to ask.

List all the options that the truck has, power steering? AC? What trans?

There are five factory units for the 98 2.5L std trans, the reason being depending on weather its a federal emissions truck or a California truck (drive train) also if it has ac, another problem is do you have the up and down stream oxy sensors on the truck, ac is the only option on the truck power steering came on all 98 up due to the rack and pinion steering, post the #,s on the unit that was in the truck when you got it, it must be the correct one or the 2.5 harness should not have plugged into it how many pins 24 or 32
