I have a 93 ford ranger stock, looking to put 35s on but was wondering if my front cv axles will hold up...help.. do i have to do something so that it won't break? im gettin different answers.

thanks

First, you don't have CV's.

Second, 760x Spicer U joints with full snap rings

You will want to regear with 35's, but ratios will depend on engine/tranny. Check the Tech Library for more suggestions on strengthening your front end setup.

I'm new to this, I'm just trying to find the best and cheapest way to do some good 4x4in...

I swap my 3.0 out and put a 4.0, with a 5speed tranny, with the 35s do you think my front u joints or axle will hold up??

thanks

everything he said^
if your easy on the gas you wont break it, but if you are hard on it. you probably will

Anything can be broken if you beat on it hard enough... Just know your limits and it should hold up fine.

Upgrades you'll want to do:

New 4.88 or 5.13 gears (depending on what engine you have and/or planned use)

Warn Jeep hubs pt# 37780

Spicer 5-760X u-joints w/full-round retaining rings (or welded caps)

Optional:
Locking differential

Thanks Junkie, my copy/paste/link skills have been lacking lately.

or should i jus put 33s on till i put on a solid front axle

The D35 will hold up to 35's alright. I've even seen a few on here (with light right feet) rock 37/38's with maintenance and a few small repairs.

Unless you swap to a D60, a solid frontend doesn't gain you a whole lot... bigger brakes would be the most significant thing you'd get out of it if you use a D44.

What kind of wheeling are you planning? You a pedal-to-the-metal type? or you just want to do some trail running? Rocks? Mud? Sand? Dirt roads? Rutted roads?

I ran 35s on my Explorer and beat the dog piss outta it. Only problem I had was the crappy auto hubs. Get the Jeep hubs and roll on!

hell, i broke 2 hubs already with my d35 auto hubs on 235/75 (28" tire)

3.0's generally have the D28/35 hybrid axle, so the shafts won't be too big of a deal, but it has the smaller D28 guts. The D35 is supposedly a easy swap (I haven't done it) and it opens up a lot more options for lockers and gearing. The added strength might be nice if you are planning on a 4.0 swap too. Some 3.0's did come with the D35 front axle but they are not really common.

Actually Im pretty sure most 3.0's have the legit 35, its the 2.3 with the fake one, mine has a true d35

Either way, well worth checking out before ordering gears. And they deffinatly came both ways.

Your gunna get different answers, cause we're all different drivers on different types of terrain.

What type of stuff do you expect you'll do with this truck? And how delicately do you clutch and throttle feet work together?

Me personally, I have a heavy right foot and a very light left foot(used to, it got expensive). And went on trails that typically required 40"+ tires. My D35 was Lincoln locked w/ full snapringed and welded cap 760 ujoints, Warn (Ranger) Hubs, not geared down(3.27:1), and ran 31" tires.
I broke lots and lots of parts. The final straw was when I broke my beams.

Take it from me If you SAS, go with a D60. The money I've got in D35 repairs, and my D44 swap would have easily tacked the D60 price tag.

Or, put the money into the D35 the right way before you start breakin stuff.
