Will a cold air intake box improve the performance of an after market high flow intake filter?

Just one heads up

If you can HEAR the new setup, its restricted, so not a good build

Air turbulence is bad, air turbulence makes noise, so noise from intake of air is bad

People often like the sound of air being sucked in, thats fine, as long as you know its less power not more power

.What???

..that most certainly is not the rule

you hear the intakes on all of the high HP models.....they dont have silencers.

I do have a fairly large intake box in mind, much larger than the original. So far it seems as though most feel that this little project will be worth the while.

If done right, it is. Most people just yank the stock air intake system off and throw a tube with a conical filter on that sucks hot air from the engine bay and think they did something. Well, they did but not what they think they did...

That is my second favorite Mopar induction system.

This is my 3rd favorite.........with number 1 being shaker naturally...

You know.....hot air intake...can't be better then the Rams.

My plan was to use this two gallon square black plastic pail. It fits the space just perfectly. Then cut out a hole on the front side for the cold air intake just behind the headlight on the passenger's side. Then cut a circular hole for the snorkel opening and attach the filter inside. It's a little cold here right now in Minnesota (2 below in my garage) but I could start soon downstairs in my basement.

Then it was certainly done for the customers liking not for performance
People like it, think its cool and do associate it with "powerful engines"

But same as playing cards in the spokes of your bike, it just sounds cool, although I know for a fact my bike was faster with these added

With EFI, if you have air tube removed so throttle plate is exposed and you do WOT a few times you will hear the air flow, because of the turbulence of throttle plate(EFI or carb), can't avoid it

Once air tube and air cleaner are in place you shouldn't hear it unless the air filter or hose has a restriction
It is, in essence, "silenced" or should be

There are air tube lengths that could cause a resonance/harmonics at certain RPMs on some engine, car makers would add "silencers" or "resonators" to these, basically it was like white noise generator, these didn't restrict air flow just made it quieter and in some cases smoothed out the air for for BETTER power

Be sure to put a baffle in front the hole behind the grill so rain water can't come in directly
No, "ram air" does add anything at speeds below 150mph, lol

Yes thanks, also a couple small weep holes in the bottom of that bucket to keep any moisture out.

150 mph?

Some start at 25 mph.....positive pressure at cowl.

All intakes are setup for nvh..

If they have air filters.

Max power is no tube. No filter.

Max power. No maf. But that's max power....not go to work Honda or ranger.

Your right in the tuning to drive. There are some rare situations... especially when air meters are incorporated where tuning flow is required....

Hot air intakes, can...and...usually still make more power then most oem setups. Because when your driving the air exchange negates the idle situation....you can see that with most scan tools now...so...not a debate.

For me...I usually go with the easiest possible setup which tends to be oem.

Not enough gain generally to go through the effort to put a tube and cone filter on unless your pos ford filter housing failed.

Regardless...

2.9 factory ford ranger intake inverted and piped to the cowl is way noisier....huge noise..

No changes except pulling out of cowl where you can here it restricting the fawk out of the induction to protect it....but not pulling from front...

Just has a harder time picking up water and allows deeper fording for free.

Just listening to a noisy v6 is not for me....so I put 8 in...and eventually got better mpg too..with twice the engine.

I just love eights, all except these days I want to reduce my carbon footprint. In my little world, a little performance is always welcome, but I care more about a little extra MPG.

I am cheating ....I went diesel

Cowl induction, please, cutting holes in the hood is for better cooling of engine bay, and looks cool
And if you can stick part of the intake above the hood and loosen motor mounts a bit so it rocks back and forth when you REV IT UP, its very cool

You want more air then turbo or super charger are the options, a scoop on the hood is for looks

Airplanes used ram air induction, cars used cool looking air cleaners, every one knows this, lol

What the fawk are you saying?

I can freeze an intake shut in minutes under certain conditions. Found that out on accident. Inlet and outlets can be important.

Cowl induction can be better or worse for something. Turbulence from front of vehicle at it's normal inlet is still turbulence ....this vs cowl is not the same.....I pull from the cowl....not holes in the hood by the cowl... If you tape the cowl closed you get no circulation through the cab.

Depending on what I am doing... I may take the hood off. I suppose that don't help?

You can not say it's less or more....without seeing the exact situation and measuring it. Moving a filter a few inches can be 10 degrees intake temp...

There are certain jeeps I can get about 20 HP out of taking the intakes off and fans....that are that way simply Because nvh....

And I bust alot of engine and trans mounts....and nothing is cool about that.
