Hello I just picked up a 1996 2.3 ranger 2wd made in May of 1996. I also have a very rusty 92 ranger with a good motor and tranny and was wanting to know if I should pull the 92 tranny and motor and save them for back ups on the 96. Are the blocks and heads the same? Also what about all the sensors and wiring? They both look the same but I do blieve there are some changes someplace because the junkyards say they will not swap one to another. Thanks

Well............

Not sure what year they started with the 8 plug heads w/coil pack and NO DISTRIBUTOR, but I know the 93-97 where, and 87 to ? had a 4 plug head and a distributor.

Hope this helps ya a lil'!!!:icon_cheers:

No, the 92 motor wont work in the '96, the '96 block has a different type of Crank sensor and is cast different then the '92 block. If you read the sticky Titled "2.3 and 2.5 lima family" on the top of of the forum it explanes the differences. The trans on the other hand should work.
