I have an 85 BII with the 2.8 and as it turns out I can’t find a new y pipe. I can get one for the 2.9 but don’t know if it will bolt on the manifolds. Both look identical with the exception of the collectors but that’s not an issue for me. Has anyone tried this? I could take the one off my 89 2.9 BII and try it but it seems like a lot of extra work for a question one of y’all may already know the answer to. Thanks gang.

I kinda doubt it, IIRC the 2.9 manifolds extend farther back and tip down more.

I know the manifolds are very different to the point I doubt Ford cared about y pipe interchangeability.

85_Ranger4x4, turns out they are not interchangeable. You are correct. Took the 89 BII 2.9 out yesterday and blew out the muffler. Took off all the exhaust this morning and checked for similarities. They are way different. Back to the drawing board. Carry on gang. Great day above the grass.

There is a aftermarket Y-pipe for off roading. But you'll need to do some digging to get one,but works well. I think 🤔 jcWittny or Jeggsauto. But any muffler shop should be able to fix your old one with mandrel pipe really cheap.

Have these . Didn't realize it was a 2.8 till I unloaded the engine out of the back. Bought it for parts. Wish you were closer.

Yeah looks simulator to2.9 but shower distance and higher lift than 2.9l its all in the discharge on manifolds.

Yeah looks simulator to2.9 but shower distance and higher lift than 2.9l its all in the discharge on manifolds.the one on the right is a 2.9l the one on the left is a older 2.8l off road but will convert if you swap collector's. You'll need to pull the pipes in a little bit for it to work. But bam! It's done.

Sorry ment to say the left is 2.9l and right is 2.8l pipes. My bad.

Here's the drivers side stock manifold w/ Egremont tube the casting numbers help identify 2.8 versions from 2.9l .

As long as they mount with the same size "socket" to the manifold, any exhaust shop should be able to make the rest of it work. That's assuming you can't find the correct parts somewhere.

The 2.8 y pipe I have is in good condition aside from the flanges rusted thru. Without them I couldn’t attach it to the manifolds. I bought some flanges from the exhaust shop but to get them on the pipe I had to cut the pipe and weld them back together with new flanges on. Turned out ok but was more interested in using the early 2.9 y pipe as it ends in dual collectors. Thinking I could use one as a base for dual exhaust. Thanks for all the input. I’m just a shade tree mechanic playing with my toys in the barn.

Well you have your own damn riding stable going on...

I will say if I find another good Bronco II... I might just start a collection too.
