Why doesn't every truck have these?

So we had a guy pickup a camper and his truck has side doors for his bed. They are actually for a storage compartment in the bed of the truck but I saw that and thought to myself why don't they make beds with side doors? I used to always climb up the side of the bed by hopping up on the tire. This just looks like a no brainer for a selling point. Trucks now-a-days are all about new and better like the stupid new GMC tailgate. Yes it is a little odd looking but if they made the body lines a little cleaner then it would be a pretty cool design. Here's a pic.

that GMC tailgate makes me laugh. because a few years ago, GM owners didn't need that little man step that came on fords.

I want a liftgate that looks like a normal tailgate.

Don't need a stupid step just let it halfway down.

Chevy had it first....

The earliest truck I have ever seen a side gate on was a 64 A100.

The more I look around there are lots of great ideas that seem to have gone by the way side. My "new" mower has a rear-discharge deck. Until a week ago I didn't even know such a thing had ever existed, after actually mowing with one I can't for the life of me understand why we have side-discharge decks. I've been mowing grass since 1994, I have never had a cleaner looking yard without going out and racking it up myself, and I didn't have clippings blowing back at me the whole time.

Rear discharge doesn't work if you want to get a bagger which a lot of people like to do.

Also less secure for flying debris. The first time I shredded my place (with a rear discharge shredder) I found a cement block. Looked back to see what the terrbile sound was and saw exploding cement block fanning out behind the shredder.

At least mine still favors one side too so it doesn't spread as evenly as a side 'charger. Can flow much more material though.

Corvair pickup was 61-64.

Don't forget the soft-open tailgate for the Nancy Boi's that are bothered by such nonsense.. I laugh every time I see a modern truck review on Youtube and they take points away from a truck because it doesn't have a soft-open tailgate.

A lot of the older trucks that had side toolboxes built-in to the bed, they became rust buckets very quickly. Those boxes were great places for dirt and water to collect.

:iamwithstupid: You dont see many around here for that reason. I had a old c3500 with a reading utility box on it that needed to be completely emptied and cleaned inside and out 3-4 times a year to keep it from rusting. Very annoying task getting all the salt and dirt from all the corners and seems of each door, box, latch etc.

Definitely wasted space between the actual bed, and bed sides. It would need a better coating to prevent rust, or built out of fiberglass.

Heres another one i saw a while back while grabbing some breakfast... dont judge haha.

It can't be that hard or expensive to do a dual discharge style for a bagger though, literally every push mower I have ever owned had that. It went rear for the bag, and side if you had the bag off, which makes a lot of sense if you are walking behind it.

That's all well and good for a big pull behind deck in a field, but how often does the average person run into stuff like that in the yard?

My belly mower on my cub is rear discharge. Youre right @adsm08 i think its superior to side discharge.

I forgot about the corvair pickups.

My 77 has the bedside tool box. Still 100% solid. The door is a bitch to get open though so i dont use it much.

Hmmmm I've discharged from the front and rear but never from the side....

Scale it down because a cement block would explode a lawn mower not the other way around, a stick can cause a lot of debris.

It happens enough that blade speed is a govt regulated thing now so parts of blades can only fly so far.
