Wheelin Meet This Winter

Never been there but from what I hear it was pretty boring before, that new stuff looks intense!

Yeah, digging holes is fucking retarded. It's the most annoying thing about tahuya, followed by all the standing water.

The trail section where they actually brought in material to build it with the rocks however, is tits. I'm all about meeting you guys, but one section still does not make it worth my fuel costs to drive there when I can run 99% of it in 2wd... I was just out there in march.. and was bored out of my mind.

The easy trails at elbe are fun in the winter, with snow.

Yeah I hear what you're saying totally. Its boring for me too, and I'm realizing that with 31s and a L/S, my rig was adequate, but with the recent changes I've made, it's a little overkill.

I just got word that they're adding another, longer, less difficult rock/hill climb. No pictures or other info though. I'd be interested in seeing Elbe or Evans over the summer, and doing some camping up there.

Agreed that Tahuya wasn't a very fun place for the drive, other than the rock pile, there wasn't much there. But I would like to check out the new trail, and whatever new trails are built in the future. It seems as though DNR has finally started to see the need for some "Upgrades" to suit the better built rigs, and not just at tahuya. This is great news, even if you don't use tahuya. Most of the other wheeling areas around here are owned by DNR, with the exception of Evans. The important part here is that improvements are being made, and all of it is being done by volunteers working with DNR to add to our sport, while everybody else is working hard to take away from our sport.

Anyways, I can be there the 20th, looking forward to checking it out. :icon_thumby:

It would be cool if they are doing an easier hill climb. I like challeging, but I also like straight body panels. Not that I really have any left, but still (I've had some sort of dent/ damage in every panel except for the hood and roof).

Yeah, I've been to Elbe (once) and Evans Creek both (mainly Evans) and I will deffentally be heading back to both next summer no question about it!

Usually when I go up to Evans I camp there all weekend.
Going up for just the day is nice, but I like getting away for a whole weekend.

EDIT: Hope this isn't too random, but does anybody know how old you have to be in order to get Broad Form Insurance? My dad thought it was 25, but one of my friends is 21, and he's had Broad Form for a while (I should have asked him while I was talking to him). I've searched the hell out of google and haven't found anything.

I agree on the straight body panels. I put a few good dents in the truck over the spring and summer, but I'd like it to last a little longer before I stop caring. Tahuya is nice to camp... the DNR guys come in and check, but just want to make sure you're being semi-decent and are allowed to be there. Then they leave. The campground is by a nice river if it's hot out too.

No clue on the insurance though... Is that the kind that covers you no matter what you drive?

I agree with the campground thing. They are pretty damn nice compared to Evans Creek. I've camped campground that wasn't really by the river, I think one site was, but that was it, and then I've camped in the staging area becuase the actual sites were all reserved.

Broad Form is where the driver is covered. If you wreck the car, you're out the car. And you can have/ drive as many cars as you want. But we (my family, since I'm under 18) have normal style insurance where the car is insured, so your rates sky rocket when you add an extra vehicle, or driver (something about they take how many drivers you have, and multiple it by something, and then multpily that by how many cars you are insuring).
It would be so nice to have more than one car!! If I HAVE to do something to the Ranger, I basicly screw up my parents schedule, so that I can some how get a ride to school, and then work.. It sucks.

Not sure on the broadform thing, I had heard it was 25 also, but I have yet to find an insurance company that offers it anymore. I know mine doesn't (Progressive), I looked into the same thing, since I spend alot of time driving other peoples cars, and have way too many to insure myself. If you find out anything, post up, I'm still interested.

ok so the plan as of now is tahuya on december 20th? I'm game with "easy" stuff. my b2 is my daily driver and i plan on doing new paint and bodywork next summer so body damage is fine but i'd rather not. where do you guys usually meet? i've never been so do i need a washington orv permit or what? how about maybe some directions from i-5 or someone wanna meet me on i-5? that would be too cool

To my knowledge the plan is still December 20th, that's when I'll be going unless it changes. You don't need any RV passes, or permits or anything. Unless somebody knwos something I don't.

It really isn't too hard to get there. It would be a drive from Oregon though..

The wheeling isn't horribly tough at all. You'll use 4wheel drive mostly for the low ranger.

We usually meet at the Safeway parking lot right as you come into Belfair. If you manage to miss the safeway, you are blind.

You could probably search Google Earth/ Maps for directions, but you get off of I-5 in Tacoma (bremeton, something exit ), and head towards Bremerton (across the Narrows bidge). You just stay on that for probaly 20, or 25 miles, then it kind of merges with another highway right as you ceme into Bemerton. You need to go to the left hand side of the new highway, and imediately get off on the exit (it's on the left hand side of the highway, not the right side like normal) which is labeled Belfair, and something else. From there it takes you down a little road for maybe 1000 feet, and comes to an intersection, where you make a left towards Belfair. head down that highway for maybe 5 or 10 miles, and it dumps straight into Belfair, and the Safeway is on you right, as soon as you see civilization.

I just searched Google Earth for Oregon City to Belfair, and it says 169 miles.
A bit of a drive, but if you want to come, by all means, it be nice to have another Ranger guy.
Wait, I just noticed that Google Earth says to turn off in Olympia and go that way, not up through Tacoma. It looks like going through Tacoma is longer.
I'll leave those directions up incase somebody else needs them.

One other thing, my cousin may want to come if he gets his IH Scout done. He's doing a spring over, and reverse shackle, and roll cage, so he wants to test things out.
And my friend Casey may also want to come. He has a 92 (I think) Ranger with a cut off top, lol. so that would be another Ranger, not random rig.

yeah i believe its only like 2 hours and it would suck massive sack to break somethin that far away but i really want to go there. i'll look for a map thanks... what time y'all meet at safeway? i drive a b2 by the way ha ha!

*EDIT*
ok so it says 3 hours 24 minutes... think it's worth it? we shall see when it comes time to go...

I usually like to meet at 9 when I go wheeling. That way you're getting out there before everybody else, and you have all day to wheel, not just part.

I just did quick math, and 170 miles, at 15mpg with $2.30 gas, is only $25 forth of gas to get there. That isn't too much. If gas was still $4.50 a gallon, I'd say it was not worth coming, becuase it would have cost over 100 bucks to get there and back.
I drive close to 60 miles to get there.

I know Totalled will say it isn't worth a 30 mile drive, but I think it'd be worth a drive if you can pay for the gas.
It is pretty stocker friend, and a slightly modified truck (like yours, mine, and alot of others on this site) can still have a blast for a day.

Unless you are just doing something stupid, I doubt you will break anything at Tahuya. Hitting water hard is one of the ones that comes to mind. Theres quite a bit of water there in the winter, so the skinny pedal aint your friend in water.

I think there is defentally going to be alot of water out there come Christmas time. There's alot out there right now.

Are you expecting Tahuya to be really challenging/ moderating challeging for YOUR rig, or are you expecting a place to just wheel around all day?

Tahuya isn't like some places. Alot of places, once you're on a trail, you have to do the complete thing, or turn around. At Tahuya, there are a bunch of trails everywhere, so you pretty much just decide your own trails (using legal ones) becuase there's alot of crossings, so you can change your path if you want.

Search Yotube for Tahuya, and you'll find alot of good videos that show what the place is like. I really like Tahuya.

Going through Olympia on 101 is probably quicker, I'd do that. You don't need a permit or anything.

i'm expecting a place that has some daily driver friendly trails with some slightly challenging stuff if i get a wild hair. one of my biggest concerns is breaking something just because of the long drive from home... i need to make it back as well

skinny pedal + water =

You should be fine. They just added some new trails out there with some tricky rock climbs, but they are side trails and most if not all tricky obstacles have bypasses. I've wheeled there for a day then driven down to PDX afterward, so just pay attention and you'll be alright. It's definitely stock friendly.
