My 1995 Ext Cab with 3.73 gears and stock P225/60R15 was used as a daily driver from 1996-2007. Living in WI with the drastic temperature range throughout the year allowed me to average 18-20mpg in the colder months (nov-apr) and 21-24mpg during the warmer weather. That's for mostly city driving. In summer with a good mix of highway driving I would get 25.5mpg quite frequently.
I do remember the summer of 1999 when I got 27.5mpg (my personal best to-date) on a roadtrip to Wisconsin Dells with the (then) gf. Amazingly she was driving most of the way....hmm. It was also during August and I recall the temperature/humidity were perfect for efficient combustion...i'm sure that was it, lol.
I now drive a '98 Corolla everyday and is doesn't get all that much better mileage, maybe 26-27mpg at its peak. 1.8L 1ZZFE.
