Overall... they're great little trucks. They all have their quirks but show me any that don't.
They're fairly easy and inexpensive to maintain and if you maintain it and don't drive it like you stole it. They tend to just keep doing what they do.
Get on Amazon and pick up a bluetooth adapter and have a look at FORScan... compatible with your smart phone. It will open up worlds of information

What year did they switch to OBDII? I keep forgetting. His 95 might still be OBDI.

I believe it was 1996... I just seen the OP state OBDII and apparently overlooked the model year.

Interesting. I missed his mention of OBDII. I also thought it was around 96-97. Maybe some swappage has occurred in the history of this truck.

Mine is obd2 and its a 95 but late 95 they switched in 96

OBDII wasn’t mandatory until ‘96 on light duty vehicles. Rangers went to OBDII in 95... basically if it has the 95+ dash, it’s OBDII. If it has the 89-94 dash, it’s EECIV.

I also hate OBD2, having easy access to so much extensive diagnostic information is a royal pain in the butt.

Obd II is way better than 1. Obd 1 had a huge window of variance that could go undetectable while trying to diagnose a driveabity issue. Had to do pin testing with a break out box to get accurate readings on all the inputs of the computer. Obd 2 windows are much smaller and generally point you in the right direction sooner. Please be aware in 95 there where transition models that used an obd 2 connector but were actually obd 1 systems behind the connector. A snap on MT 2500 scanner was a help with that issue. If a 95 model has obd 2 plug then this is your situation - obd 1 system with an obd 2 connection.
