Whats the mileage of your 2.3L?

My 88 ranger 2.3, 5 speed, ext cab, 236,000 + miles on the the never opened engine, 22 mpg city, 26 mpg hwy. It's getting a new engine in the next couple of weeks, the original engine is getting noisy, but still has good oil pressure.

My 92' has 225468 on the odometer and still gets aproximatly 20mpg. I drive it to and from work daily (50 miles) and just about anytime I go anywhere. I bought it from my Father-in-law for $1000, which he bought it when it was 1 yr old to pull behind the RV. It had 69,000 miles on it when I got it. The oil, filter, fuel filter, gets normal changing and I put in a K&N. 2 timing belts and 2 set of tires and one coil pack is all that has been replaced. Its been a great truck and hope she keeps going for a long time. Plus it is really cheap on insurance, $35 mo for full coverage. Who can argue with that.

Cricket is a 1991 and has 247,000.

We STILL have not resolved the problems with it, so it is still down.

If this truck is completely dead (as in inaffordably fixable)...though I will be SO sad, hey, we bought it in 1996 for $2500...and what have we had to do?

1. Timing Belt at 150k
2. PCV valve
3. Clutch at 200k
4. Oil pump

That's it...nothing more. And actually, insurance paid for most of our truck...it got in a hailstorm 3 months into owning it, and we paid the $1800 payout to the note instead of getting the dings fixed, as the body already had dings.

I have the 94 extcab with 2.3 and 103k miles. I've had it for 3 years and did 25k miles and the only thing I actually had to replace was a relay. I usually get 27 to 30 mpg on a good day. I will only buy a Ranger.

DesertStorm, quick question: how does the 4.56 and 33's do with 2.3? are you running 33x12.5 or 10.5? Thanks.

I am running 33x12.50R15 on 15x8 crawler rims. The 4.56 works very well pulling the 33's. It has just a little more acceleration than stock. Stock was 3.45 with open diff. I needed a 4.40 or something close to that to get back to stock gearing. I put the 4.56 gears in along with a L/S. The 2.3 pulls very well. I haul a lot of firewood with this truck it actually pulls better than stock unless it is a very long steep hill then I will have to shift out of o/d into 4th. But besides that I love it. I can put the truck in 1st and get out and walk beside it. Not a granny crawl but it will do.

Squeeky the Wonder Truck is a '96 with 152,401 miles on her right now.
I commute 126 miles per DAY to work. And I make a trip to Mississippi later this year(she went once before).
She gets about 25 MPG average, sometimes more.
So far I think I've had:
Fuel pump replaced
Serpentine belt replaced
Injectors blown out(cleaned?) twice
Fuel filter replaced
MAF sensor replaced(myself)
and now the PCM(and possibly more) needs fixed.
The interior light suddenly refused to go off at some point early on, and I pulled the fuse, to make it go away, so there is no interior light. Never bothered to check to see what was REALLY wrong.
I got this truck about 3-4 years ago, after it set up in a salt marsh for a couple years. It was free, and got a tune up before they gave it to me, so I sure can't complain!!
It's left me stranded twice, once when the fuel pump went, and once when the serpentine belt went. Both times I paid a lot to have that fixed(the serpentine belt was $300- no joking.) but now, I'm learning to do things myself instead.

My baby is a 92 metallic green XLT. Currently it has 138,000 on it and running like a champ. I am replacing the timing belt tomorrow because I noticed a rib of the belt had broken and was sticking out from under the cover. I bought it used from a friend who had just been told it needed the motor rebuilt. That was in 99 and it had 81,000 then. It had no oil pressure. I pulled the pan found the pump and screen clogged with cork gasket material. Replaced them and the valve cover gasket, clutch, throw out etc, new brakes front and rear, new exhaust cat back, new headliner, pressure washed and cleaned the underneath while the tranny was out and then undercoated it from front to rear, replace the fuel filter twice, on the second set of tires, got a great deal on exact match rims and new tires for 150 and sold the used tires for 40. Kept the extra rims. What else, oh bought a new instrument cluster off eBay for the tach, reinsulated the floor and added soundproofing, replaced the serp. belt twice, all hoses, plugs once, needs new wires and vacuum hoses replaced now. Will probably do that along with timing belt tomorrow and I will probably go ahead and replace the water pump and definitely the thermostat also. Routine maintenance oil changes, lube, filters, bulbs, all the small incidentals that go along with owning a vehicle. I have done everything myself with the exception of tires and exhaust. My biggest complaint is the poor headlights. The originals fogged up and the reflective paint pealed off the inside. I replaced them with after market ones and now they have done the same thing. Has anyone ever opened up a headlamp and resprayed the interior cleaned and polished the glass and then resealed it? I kept the originals and am contemplating doing this. I found the stuff needed at Eastwood.com.

My 88 2.3 had 255,111 on it when i pulled the motor..it ran pretty good , could have used a tune up though.

My timing belt broke at 135,500 miles and it was a real pain having to trailer it home. If I were you I would change it before it breaks on you.

going strong

i have had 3 rangers
1) 1988 ford ranger 2.3l 340,000mi then to 5.0 for another 40,000 befor i sold it for $400(looked like hell) i also replaced the 5 speed tranny at about 300,000(the whine was annoying)
2)1988 ford ranger 4x4 bought it with 156,000 with a 91 mustang 5.0 and t5 and 9" rear from a 77 lincon verselles (4 wheel disk brakes). still have that one now has almost 200,000 on it
3)1996 ranger with 289,000. bought for $280.00 with a broken timing belt from the original owner. has a missfire detailed in another thread but still very driveable.
and one gmc suburban
with 140,000 miles that i have had to replace engine and tranny in at 120,000 and the abs crapped out.(but i like the underhood light it comes in handy)

How'd ya do that?

And I forgot- I've also fixed (not replaced) a leaking gas filler hose and fixed a crack in the gas tank. Also forgotten, I had a front-end alignment done once.

I have replaced my leaking filler hose TWICE at $200 a pop. How did you do yours?
Ford know they have a problem with these hoses, and the local dealers in Sacramento keep 2-3 on the shelf all the time. I call it a safety issue, and have notified NHTSA about it, but they don't care about gasoline spilling out of fuel tanks.

95 ranger

I have a 95 XLT regular cab. 2.3, 5 speed. It IS a working truck! And kinda looks like it. I bought it in 2000 w/ 67,000 mile on it. On the hiway I get 25-26 if I drive 65-70. If I go over 72 it drops off to about 21.
Around town I get 17-18, but I have a lead foot and work that little motor hard. He (Rocky) has 132,000 on the clock now and I have replaced the clutch and timing belt at 90k, shocks, front brakes, 2 batteries, 2 sets of plugs, Tires, and the drivers side motor mount after I broke it.
I started using Mobil 1 when I got the truck and change it when it uses the second quart. I just added the 1st one 2 weeks ago at 5,000 miles and the next qt usually is burnt at the 7,500-8,000 mile mark. I dont change the oil filter in between.
This truck is stone cold reliable and has never broke down. I have hauled 1/2 yards of gravel or dirt, 1,400 pounds of 3/4 oak flooring, tons of firewood, a bunch of lumber since we have been remodeling the house and I towed my '90 Lincoln Mark VII back from LA to Sacramento on a tow dolly over the Grape Vine.
The tranny grinds if I shift to fast into 2nd and 3rd, but thats my fault for speed shifting it all the time.
I would have no problem with jumping in my truck and drive cross country with it today! Cuz damn, IT"S A FORD!
It has done other amazing feats too, but than I would just be bragging:icon_thumby:

Trucky!!

I have a 91 regular cad long bed 5 speed it has 120K and I got it with 99,696 ( no joke). got it for $100 because the kid thought the transmission was going but it just need a clutch. it also needed gas tank straps so I made some up out of stainless steel metal. I had to do front brake lines and front pads and rotors. the rear shocks were done and front need to be done soon. 2 ignition control modules, plugs and wires and one coil pack. U joints. clutch safety switch. for about 2 weeks I had to start my truck with a screwdriver, I jumped the solenoid on the fire wall to start my truck! (people thought i was stealing my truck it was funny). i also had to change out the drivers side floor! god bless NY salt!

My 1994 Ranger 2.3l Has 143,680 miles on it. I paid 1,500$ and it had 135,000 miles when i got it. The body is in good condition along with the interior. Minor rust above the passenger side wheel though. So far I've Installed a clutch kit (clutch, pressure plate, release bearing), I put in the 3 rubber plugs that usually leak on the trans, new trans crossmember, complete exhaust, Radiator, hoses, thermostat, and water pump. I also replaced a rusty tailgate that was actually stolen. I replaced the factory radio and speakers as well. Running strong! Gotta love those 8 plug work horses!
