What year did ford start putting airbags in the Ranger?

1995 was the first year Ford added an airbag to the Ranger.

EDIT: A straycat beat me to it.

We all know how amazingly accurate Wikipedia is, this line is included in the Ranger article there.

Ford Ranger (North America) said:
1995 included a steering wheel modified to include a driver's side airbag and a redesigned dashboard which included a double DIN radio head unit and a standard passenger airbag with a key-operated cutoff switch that allowed the airbag to be turned off for smaller passengers riding in the front seat.

Based on that I'd say 95 was the first year. 4

my '93 has a airbag, the '88 didnt. im thinking probly gen 3 was the start (1993) my '93 taurus also had a airbag. both vehicles were steeriing wheel only airbag. taurus could have had a optional passenger side airbag. (mine didnt) have no idea when the ranger would have gotton passenger side airbags.

Does it actually have it or does it just look like it has it?

The parent's '94 Explorer had a really fat airbag wannabe looking steering wheel, it didn't have it though.

Most Gen 3's that I have seen at the Pull A Part have driver side airbags. 93 and 94's. 95 I believe is the first year that the ranger had dual airbags.

I think even a few gen 2's have had them as well.

And another point on the 95+ Rangers, the steering wheels changed to a different style. The earlier steering wheels looked more like a fat regular steering wheel. the 2nd gen and early 3rd gen's had the airbag module behind a single cover that includedt he cruise control buttons, the 95 + had the airbag module completely seperate from the cruise and other functions, except for the horn, which you pressed the entire airbag module to operate.

racsan ..... 97RangerXLT..... :icon_confused:

WTF are you guys talking about? The first year the Ranger had an airbag is '95.

If you have this style dash/steering wheel:

Then you DO NOT HAVE AN AIRBAG!
(and ALL 1993 and 1994 Rangers had this style dash. Therefore, 1994 and older Rangers do NOT have airbags. Period!)

1995 was the first year any Ranger had an airbag, and the driver's side ONLY was standard. A passenger side airbag was OPTIONAL. I'm not sure which year the passenger side became standard.

95 has driver's airbag, and the dash has the spot for the pass side, but they didn't introduce the pass side until 98.

Racsun, Unless your truck has the the 4 spoke steering wheel it doesn't have an airbag.

Exbass, where is the key lock tab? The two 94's I've had both have the key lock tab.

That was just a random picture I found online. I assume both of your trucks had manual transmissions? Only manuals have the key lock tab, automatics don't.

Oh. Yes of course they are manuals. Didn't know that auto's didn't have that.
