So I’ve asked similar questions pertaining to this job previously but I am swapping my fm146 out of my 2.9 88 xlt to a m5odr2-HD from an 4.0 09. I’ve retained the 2.9 size flywheel and clutch. Am I going to have to use a different starter than the original size one for the 2.9 setup? If so, what one can I use to properly engage the 2.9 size flywheel?

I don't want to steer you wrong...

I believe you can use either the one you have or a 4.0 starter from any year. I think I ran into an issue with the block plate one time though where a newer starter didn't fit an older block plate or vise versa - don't remember. The big hole was just a hair too small for the starter to fit into. Just check to verify fitment if you mix & match.

If you use a 4.0 starter you'll need the positive battery cable too, they are wired differently.

And make sure you use a starter for a manual and not an auto. They are different.
