Just picked up a 98 ranger 4.0l 4x4 with 115k on it in my 95 i always ran Mobile 1 but I had it with 40k on it. Question im asking is. Is there a better oil to run in a truck with 115k on it. The owner said he runs Autozone 5w30 im not too keen on that stuff.

I run royal purple , I used to use mobile 1

Oil brand does not really matter. Changing it regularly is 1000x more important than what brand you use. If the oil meets the API SM spec (and pretty much every oil does, even Autozone), it's good for at least 5k miles and your engine will outlive the rest of the truck if you change the oil on time. Synthetics are great if you drive in extreme temperatures, beat the crap out of it, or want to extend change intervals. If you don't do any of that, it's probably not necessary. But you certainly still could use it if you want.

The brand is usually the LAST thing I consider when buying oil. When I buy oil, my priorities are:
1. viscosity. Go with what Ford says (5w30)
2. type of oil (conventional, synthetic, syn blend) See paragraph above. I personally use synthetic in everything I own, even my lawnmower. It's not that much more than conventional, and gives me extra peace of mind.
3. Price. Whatever's cheapest for me.

My Ranger gets nothing but Mobile1 or Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic and has been getting that since about 45k miles. (I used Motorcraft Synthetic Blend for awhile before that).

Since full synthetics usually have better cleaning power than regular oil, I've been hesitant to use it in my older vehicles with over 70k miles. So they usually get Quaker State in 5w-30 or 10w-30 as called for in the book. I do, however, throw in a shot of ATF once in awhile for cleaning purposes. (no more than a cup during an oil change of 5 quarts)

Guys, it's Mobil 1, not Mobile. Sorry, it's a pet peeve.

Oh man are you opening another can of well, you know. Oil is a personal preference. You get what you pay for so I'll say this: Synthetic is better than blend. Blend is better than conventional. Use what you like & feel will work. Synthetic can be used no matter what mileage is on the engine.

Just use what you want and change it when recommended.

+1000.

I use Valvoline 5w30 conventional. My ranger has 107,000 with NO leaks, no oil consumption, and no problems whatsoever. I was considering going to a Blend or full synthetic but i've heard of leaking problems when you switch, and i didn't want to commit to the price difference.

lol, sorry, my mind is elsewhere this morning, the coffee hasn't kicked in yet.:icon_twisted:

I have heard that the synthetic blends are not as harsh as full synthetic when it comes to cleaning, but I'm not sure that they really provide any advantage.

So switching from conventional to a blended synthetic is pointless? Other than extending oil change intervals?

I ran a blend but switched to Mobil 1 high mileage and havent had any problems with it. Always with a Motorcraft filter.

Think this is very good advice, lots of very misleading info out there, lots of it 40 years outdated. I usually use the Ford blend or a Mobil ! and the Ford filters. I do use 5W-50 in the Mustang, that's what they (Roush) told me to use.

Motorcraft synthetic blend 5w-30 with a Motorcraft filter on my 98 4.0.
