What kind of oil do you run in your 4.0L?

Does Ford call for 5w20 in the newer 4.0's?

Pretty sure my parents '02 4.0 calls for 5W-30. I thought that they were one of the last Ford engines to still call for something other than 5W-20?

I use Valvoline synthetic. Viscosity ranges from 5W-30 to 10W-40 depending on the season and how much I am towing. I change the oil every 20,000 miles and the filter (Motorcraft) every 5,000 miles whether it needs it or not. That is based on an oil analysis and the use of an additional micron by-pass filter.

i have a higher mileage motor(125K miles)my luck so far is with royal purple 10w30(synthetic) all the rest i have had lots of blow by and ticking.with royal i haven't noticed any blue and engine noise is almost nothing now.:yahoo:

Early post by a newbie...glad I found this forum. Anyway, our Ranger is a '99 XLT 4.0, 2 wheel drive. Bought it new as a grocery hauler for Cindy. 50,000 miles, only minor problems. Have used Mobil 1 since break-in, changing oil & filter every 3,000 miles at first. Now 5,000 since I figured I may have been doing some overkill.

I'm a synthetic believer...having used mobil one in the Porsche. It sold to a dear friend over a year ago.

I use Valvoline 10W-30 with a Fram Tough Guard oil filter. 3,000 mi oil changes.

oh god, another oil thread ....... its a truck, use what the manufacturer recommends. I use Castro 20w-50 in the cruiser, Castro 10w-40 in 'burban, and mobile 1 synthetic 5w-30 in the minivan. and when my cases of castro run out i will buy what ever is on sale with a big case rebate.... except citgo.

Like I said, they have worked on millions of vehicles without problems. They are just a rip off when it comes to price vs. quality. You can get much better filters for less money. A FRAM most likely won't do any damage, but it definitely will not benefit you either. You are much better off with something like a Motorcraft since you get a much better quality filter for a lower price.

I believe you when you say that you have had no problems with FRAMs, but they were a waste of money when you could have bought a better quality filter at a lower price.

hows it a waste of his money when its never given him a problem at all, just stfu and have fun wasting your money. beside they are cheap anyway i dont see how its not quality for price when its 4 dollars? wtf?

Calm down. It isn't that big of a deal.

It is a waste of money when a better quality filter is available for a lower price. Motorcrafts are a little over $3, have silicone anti drainback valves (many of them anyway), and metal end caps. Frams are $4+ and have cardboard end caps and rubber anti drainback valves. No matter what kind of logic you try to put behind it, when you buy a Fram, you are paying a premium for all of their advertising.

It isn't quality for the price when Frams have the cheapest materials and not the cheapest price. It's not hard to figure out.

PS - I'm not the one wasting my money. I buy quality filters that also cost less than Frams.

we are talking >1.00, not really relevant, for 5 quarts and a fram filter at auto zone its 12.99 i dont think the filter is even 4.

Me and my father both use Amsoil 2 stroke oil in our bikes, he ran his out of coolant and rode it back several miles back to the truck 3 years ago and that bike is still running like new. It's rated for 100:1 in all engines, our engine are rated for 100:1 too, we mix it 80:1 just because, our old chainsaw is supposed to have 40:1, we run it 80:1 and that saw runs like a champ after several years of running Amsoil 80:1.

:icon_surprised: You run 80:1 in a dirt bike!?!?!?! I can't beleive they still run. lol. I've never heard of a 2-stroke in a bike calling for less than 40:1. And that's the race bikes. most trail bikes call for 32 or 36:1. That's pretty incredible.

Valvoline Highmilage 10W30 every 3000 miles with new oil filter. Mine has 196,000 miles

Frams are typically rated low or "not recommended" in any oil filter test I've ever read. However, I know people who have used them all their lives and never had a problem. The biggest knock on Frams is their poor anti drain back valve (which shouldn't matter on a 4.0 as they are mounted where the oil can't run out) and the cardboard end caps on the filter media. Motorcraft filter are rated very high because most of them are a Purolator Pure One with the Motorcraft label on them.
