What grade gas do you use in you ranger?

Ethanol is basically the same as Heet (water remover) that people dump in their gas tanks in winter to eliminate problems water can cause in the fuel system, especially in winter.

The ethanol bonds with the water and allows it to pass through the system without any of the bad effects water droplets could cause. It also prevents the lines and filters from freezing which can cause fuel starvation problems.

This may be why your truck preforms better in winter with ethanol. You could test this theory by using straight gas to which you add a couple bottles of Heet or other water eliminator product.:icon_cheers:

My '94 2.3 has been fed a diet of plain old 87 octane with no issues. I've tried running tanks of 89, 91, and 93, but the truck seemes to perform WORSE with the high-test stuff.

Well, I'm not a chemist so I don't know the reason, but my Nissan 4-cyl gets about 0.5-1 km/L more on 90 than on 87, with a noticeable increase in power (I only have to go down to 2nd in one spot on the Coquihalla with the camper and boat on the back). So I run 90 when I'm carrying the camper over mountains, 87 everywhere else.

I've only bought one tank so far on my Ranger 4.0 L, and it was 87. Seems to work fine...

That makes sense. I think I might try some Heet on my next tank with 100% gas.

Only way to get 93 in OK is if you buy 91 w/Ethanol. Ethanol boosts the octane rating about 2 points.

Some states are selling 85 w/ethanol added which brings it to the required 87 octane.

It really boils down to the marketing and maintenence on whether or not ethanol is good or bad.

My Camaro retards timing whenever I run 93 E10... Runs great on straight gas 93... Other wise it runs like poo...
