What grade gas do you use in you ranger?

My gas mileage is better now and Its running smoother using shell gas. Im using plus or premium.

I know up here you can't buy "av-gas" with out having the plane there to refule.

Like I said before, it's not what you know, it's the PEOPLE you know! I was referring mostly to municipal airports. Their gas tanks are just past the gate.

But I find running V-power 93 in my lawnmowers, truck etc seems to "get back" the enthol loss.

Any effect you may think that you are getting from higher octane fuel, you are not. It's a simple as it has been explained that the octane only helps with detonation, the rest is the placebo effect. I've run the cheapest 87 octane fuel for years and I've gotten over 300,000 miles on a 93' E van. My Virago will knock if I don't use 93 so I must. Every other vehicle gets what the manufacture suggests. There may be more detergents in the 93 but if I want detergent I'll just add some Tide to my next tank. :D The ethanol "problem" sucks and I wish we could either go back to 100% gasoline or make the Ranger a diesel :headbang:

I RUN 87 with a 10% ethanol mix or more cause thats the only shit they sell her in phoenix..:bawling: if anyone knows of where i can get straight 87 for the going price ill buy you a beer!

I think the conoco or whatever it is.. up on butler just off milton in flag sells strait fuel.. @84projectFORD...

yes they sure do, lots of them do since there is not emissions testing up here. You will be very hard press to find any straight 87 oct in phoenix as they are trying to keep emissions down.

Im sure glad to have a diesel again though as diesel is as cheap if not cheaper then gas up here :D. i can finally start blowin smoke on the tailgater again!

I use what the manual calls for, 87.

In my 2003 Explorer 4.0, I run nothing but premium. I got 20-25 more miles per tank, and I tested it 4 times. 2 times were purely highway miles at same speed. (I tested the regular 87 octane first because at the time it was used to it). My first city tank of premium was almost worst than the 87. This may be because of my driving style (didn't pay much attention). After that, the other 3 tanks were 22, 23, and 26 more miles per tank if I remember right.

On the 3.0 ranger, I've done no such testing. I know that it feels like it runs better on Shell Premium. As mentioned it's probably the fuel additives, not the gas itself. OR the placebo effect.

Here is my logic guys.

At .05 more a gallon, a 21 gallon tank costs 1.05 more to fill up. Wouldn't you pay 1.05 to clean your injectors each tank?

At .10 a gallon, it's still 2.10 more per tank.. I'd still pay an extra 2.10 for a chance at better mileage, and to clean my injectors.

The price difference is minimal, and even if the benefit is minimal I see no reason NOT to treat the trucks to better gas.

Also, realistically, 87 and 91 octane are NOT THAT MUCH DIFFERENT octane levels. I'd be willing to bet it makes less than a 5% difference.

We use 87 in the 03 Corolla, 87 in the 2010 Rogue and 89 in the 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee and in the Ranger, I use 89 and then on the forth fill up I use 93.

the gas mileage in my Ranger/350-V8/carbed varies 5 mpg's depending on the brand......down here, Exxon then Conoco then Shell....BP is the worst--been the worst for 5 years/BP took a good fuel & made it next-to-urine!

Believe it or not.....gasoline is like whiskey...I regulary buy Conoco for the last two years/one fill-up got me 500 miles--that's 100 miles farther than I usually get on a tank of gas on the same highway with same driving conditions/temp/wind/humidity/air conditioning/load/etc...

Makes me think the guy at the refinery who mixed the fuel that day dumped in an extra gallon of SOMETHING GOOD into the vat just for laughs......

which doesn't surprise me that gasoline is 90% wet & 10% kick......like different brands of whiskey!!!!!

Its so difficult to say one brand gets you better than another. The blends change around this time of year, so the octane ratings change. The gas in Oklahoma is all the same until its loaded and then the brands additives are added. That is why unbranded stations can sell at a cheaper price. Are there really extra additives in the 91 octane. Who knows. But it is a higher octane. Saying that a higher octane will get you better mileage is a fallacy. Ethanol raises the octane rating, but does it give you better mileage.
But it does clean your fuel system.

I run 87, cause thats what it says to.

Gas is a commodity.
At any one time you will find Exxon gas at a BP station or Shell at an Mobil (on and on).
Only difference is the additives.
Also, unless you changed your compression from stock, higher octane will do nothing.
