What grade gas do you use in you ranger?

I run 100% gas always. Get better mileage and it runs a lot better. Usually run 91 octane too. I have noticed that 91 cuts down on pinging.

I run 89 octane in my 3.0 Flex fuel. It helps cut down on the slight pinging I get running 87. No noticeable difference in power, but it does seems to get about an extra 10-15 miles a tank. I mainly just use it to help with the pinging though.

87 from sunoco because its 100% gas. unless im in alabama then i get 95 octane because its cheaper than 87 here in knoxville. in the ltd i use 87 and lead adative.

Where are you buying gas at?

I usually buy my gas back in Tulsa. I dont drive my truck here enough to need to fill up. I just fill up when im back in Tulsa which is maybe once a month or so. I know that the Conoco at McElroy and Boomer Rd sells 100% though.

Re: gas

I'm a boat mechanic and was told by the factory training people that mid grade and high grade have better detergency; thus less ring sticking, valve problems, etc. So, while others may better my record on 87, all I can tell you is my truck has never seen anything but Mobil, Exxon, Texaco, Sunoco or Shell 89; and I have 209K since new. Come to think of it, not have I had no fuel-related problems...or virtually ANY engine problems...but hell, I have never even replaced the fuel filter.

I was also told that "it all comes from the same depot." However, the big names put additives into the tanker trucks that the chain convenience stores don't. It would seem this might be true.

the gas mileage in my Ranger/350-V8/carbed varies 5 mpg's depending on the brand......down here, Exxon then Conoco then Shell....BP is the worst--been the worst for 5 years/BP took a good fuel & made it next-to-urine!

Believe it or not.....gasoline is like whiskey...I regulary buy Conoco for the last two years/one fill-up got me 500 miles--that's 100 miles farther than I usually get on a tank of gas on the same highway with same driving conditions/temp/wind/humidity/air conditioning/load/etc...

Makes me think the guy at the refinery who mixed the fuel that day dumped in an extra gallon of SOMETHING GOOD into the vat just for laughs......

which doesn't surprise me that gasoline is 90% wet & 10% kick......like different brands of whiskey!!!!!

Gas is a commodity.
At any one time you will find Exxon gas at a BP station or Shell at an Mobil (on and on).
Only difference is the additives.
Also, unless you changed your compression from stock, higher octane will do nothing.

In a round-about-way, you confirmed what I thought....they take a gallon of fluid.....they all get together to determine what basic mpg's they & the Feds are comfortable with....then each "Company"[ "adds the super-secret additives" that we're told about on the T.V. commercials.

A friend of mine works for a brand-name motor oil "producer".....and that's basically what they do....add "secret ingredients" to the already purified bulk oil....then fill their quart containers with the mixture.

Really? I could swear I get atleast 30% for efficiency and performace when I use it. It seems to burn up a lot quicker, though. Also depends on what gas stations you use. Some garbagy gasolines(Canadian) like Esso, Pioneer, ultramar have other combustable alternatives that are generally bad for the motor. I always use petro Canada.

glad to hear you dont buy shit gas. my old man works for petros head office. gota love good canadian fuel.

i use regular due to price.. but premium does make a difference. its only noticeable on hills to me.

aside from preventing spark knock it allows the engine to advance timing further.

if you want to take care of your ranger's fuel system, use top tier fuel (chevron, shell, ect.)

It was my understanding that Tulsa was all ethanol.
That station in stw sells both so be careful which nozzle you get.

There are a few places that still sell pure gas. not many though.

I have to used 87 w/ 10% ethanol for the cold months. My truck doesn't like 91 w/o ethanol in cold weather. Don't know why. I would like to know why it does that though. Anybody have any insight on this?

We have a place that sells anything you want... I go there so I can get 93 octane with no ethanol... The Camaro is really picky about what you use...

Only way to get 93 in OK is if you buy 91 w/Ethanol. Ethanol boosts the octane rating about 2 points.

Some states are selling 85 w/ethanol added which brings it to the required 87 octane.

It really boils down to the marketing and maintenence on whether or not ethanol is good or bad.

Ethanol is basically the same as Heet (water remover) that people dump in their gas tanks in winter to eliminate problems water can cause in the fuel system, especially in winter.

The ethanol bonds with the water and allows it to pass through the system without any of the bad effects water droplets could cause. It also prevents the lines and filters from freezing which can cause fuel starvation problems.

This may be why your truck preforms better in winter with ethanol. You could test this theory by using straight gas to which you add a couple bottles of Heet or other water eliminator product.:icon_cheers:
