could it be the 3.0 or did that come out in 92?....becouse i remeber seeing in a program in auto class that there was one year of the ranger that had the 2.9,3.0 and 4.0
3.0 was introduced in 1991, but wasn't ever put into a 4x4 gen2.
The 3.0 replaced the 2.9 in the 2wd trucks.
I've seen trucks being offered where the engine wasn't mentioned
and the seller was unable to identify the engine.
So I'd ask for a PIC AND for the seller to give you the first Eight
digits of the VIN.
The first eight sould be 1FTCR15T or 1FTCR15X
"T" is the code for 2.9, "X" the code for 4.0, but that'll
only tell you what the truck WAS originally not if someone
changed it, so the engine bay pic for backup is "nice"
as for a supercab being a 4cyl?
No.
There were allegedly a handful of '86-87 supercab 4cyl
4x4's made, but I've never seen one.
I have seen one truck that was purported to have been
a factory 4cyl 4x4 supercab, but t Vin Coding didn't match the truck.
the VIN on that questioned truck started with 1FTCR14A
"CR14" is a 2wd supercab. a 4x4 supercab that is a genuine 2.3 truck would be "1FTCR15A".
additionally that "counterfeit" truck had "witness marks"
on the underside of the engine crossmember from the large factory washer used to hold down the 2.9 motor mounts
and NON-factory hardware holding in the frame side 2.3 motor
mount brackets to the crossmember.
Lastly the brackets were the early type used on the '84 4cyl 4x4, not the hydraulic mounts that should have been used on an '86 or '87.
I regard the 4cyl 4x4 supercab to be another
Ranger Based Vehicle "unicorn myth", along with the alleged factory 4.0 Bronco2, the Factory Turbo-Diesel Supercab
and 2.3 Bronco2.
