1. looks to be leaking from rear main seal
2. tranny runs long from 3-4 shift
3. decent amount of rust underneath but not too bad. doesnt look like its seen a lot of offroad use.
4. front end components appear to be original, pulls a little to the right
5. has manual locking hubs but the electric 4wd selector.

it ran good and idled smooth oil pressure gauge stayed in the middle range tranny fluid was about half way down. so there may be a leak there too.

Price seems a little steep for all those potential problems that you stated. If rust-free, maybe. It is a 20 year old vehicle...

I definitely wouldn't pay what they're asking. I got my 99 4x4 4.0 with new tires and minor issues for 4k. I would maybe pay 3,500. But I haven't seen it in person either so...

If you look at the stock number in the ad that's probably what they have in it (keeps the salesman from running back and forth to find their bottom dollar.) Offer what you think it's worth, bring cash and I'll bet you get a better deal than you think.
