What did YOU do today?

Got a lot done on the F150 today, “new” wiper module so I have functional wipers now, fixed my “rigged” fuel pump relay & put a seat cover on the badly sun damaged seat, have another lined up but its in a truck thats sat for over 10 years & smells of mouse real bad. next is to replace the left rear tire, its wore to the cords on one spot of the outside edge and has a date code of 2006. The spare is the same tire but with bad weather checking. Went to add insurance on my app & it didn’t go through, got a message that a agent would get in touch with me. Being a holiday weekend im sure that means monday or tuesday. Im guessing its a issue of how old it is. Ive never owned anything of this age before, Im only putting basic liability on it, guessing at 5,000 or less miles/year. Maybe I should consider haggerty for “collector/classic” insurance.

Yesterday I mowed some more/again, I even fixed the front tire that leaked pretty bad for free, turns out there must have been something in the valve core, I changed it but probably could have just taken it out and put it back in... Tonight I did the same, last night I did the front portion, tonight I did the back portion. Last night I also did some cleaning on the solvent tank I've been working on, it's pretty much to the point of going outside and getting to the hose and scrubbing it with some "totally awesome" cleaner, that stuff works pretty good for being cheap as heck... not quite sure what the rest of the evening has in store, tomorrow I'm supposed to go to an auction with my brother

Hey, don’t knock the collector insurance. It’s changed a lot over the last 15 years. I’ve got Haggerty on the two custom rangers, and I’ve got Grundy on the three Lincolns. The only “normal” insurance I have is on my F250. I have to maintain normal coverage on one to get the collector policies on the others.

I have full coverage on the 96 F250, it’s almost pristine, and it’s the same price as agreed value full coverage no deductible on the other five put together. There are no restrictions on use or mileage. Well, there are, but all I have to say is I was heading to a friend‘s house to discuss going to a show next weekend.

And for full disclosure, let me add that I haven’t had a ticket or an accident in 20 years. To be clear, the cute little Burnette asked me about tickets, which is different than the number of times I’ve been stopped…

At the start of the new year, after 10 years of physical therapy, there was a dramatic increase and improvement in my health, my mobility and function. 1/7th of my life.

Now I’m getting 10 or 15 things done a day instead of 10 or 15 minutes of things. A high point yesterday was pulling the pressure washer out of the garage bathroom (where I store it so it won’t freeze) and tuning it up for the season.

It’s one of the El cheapo Harbor Freight electric units. When I got it, I almost immediately added a 50 foot hose to the 25 or 30 footer that came with it. That way I can leave it in one place all the time and reach just about everything I’m doing up and down the driveway. I think I’ve had it four years. The quality of the original shorter line has required me to make patches in the last couple years. The outer skin starts to crack, which reveals the nylon webbing. I’m sure if I let that go, it would burst shortly thereafter. I cut up 4-5” long piece of old reinforced fuel hose, split it, wrap it around the damage spot, and put a couple zip ties upstream, and downstream, pulled tight with a pair of pliers. Once in a while it’ll snag when I’m using the hose, but it is actually works very well. I must have five or six patches now. I’ll start hunting for a new hose for cheap.

wasn’t knocking collector insurance, my thought was it was might be my only option. Just picked up a used tire. $50 but that did include new valve stem & balance. And I know they cant sell my old one!

Today was a lot of little stuff. I finished painting the other set of trailer wheels and the new spindles for the trailer, Prepped the old steering rack out of the 2019 for shipment so I can get my core deposit back. Removed the wind breaker panels from the front porch. Cut and string trimmed the lawn. Drained the gas out of the snowblowers and ran them dry of fuel. And changed the oil on the two stage snow blower (it could probably have gone another season).

Went down in the basement to shut down the boiler and found water on the floor from the water system. Last time that happened the float valve blew apart (plastic) and I replaced it with a brass/bronze one. Tore into that and apparently we have reached the lifespan of the O-ring in the valve. Fortunately I had one that fit but I’ll be ordering some spares.

Then I went and worked on small projects in the shop and did some spring cleaning to the shop. Still a lot more of both to do, I had hoped to get more of that done during the winter but here we are. Hate to spend the time now but I need the shop as clean as possible before I go ahead with the extension and wrapping it in metal because I think I’m gonna have to get it mostly empty while that happens. It’s only an 8’x8’ but it’s pretty packed. It’s only going to be an 8’x12’ when I’m done but that will be enough to get organized and have room to work. There’s not really enough room for either right now. As much as I hate to take away from working on the green Ranger, I need to get the shop done, my collection of materials to finish it is getting in the way.

I went with my roommate and a friend of ours from upstairs to look at a wrecked '98 Ranger. We live in an apartment building with a dirt parking lot that already doesn't have enough space for everyone to park in, so we definitely need to buy another scrap priced Ranger to go with mine that I drug home on a trailer 11 months ago. While we were there the guy gave me a drag link and a pair of tie rod ends that he bought for his long gone 1993 Explorer about 20 years ago and never put on it. Just last weekend I tried to grease my steering linkage and blew out all four dry rotted grease boots before they even started filling up, so I will eventually need to replace all of that stuff. The box taped on top on the left was empty but he's going to see if that piece fell out in his basement.

Then we stopped at Wal-Mart since it was on the way back and all three of us needed groceries. That turned into an expensive stop for me when I found this compressor on the clearance shelf for $90.

Ended up at another auction (no, YOU have a problem lol...), I even behaved this time, I told myself no a lot... I mostly ended up with a couple hundred feet of Romex, mostly 10/2 but some 12/2 as well for $60... and a milk crate full of project scrap metal and some other longer stuff for $10, couple random $5 boxes of tools too, and a project trailer for a buddy for $500 but it's a unit with a 28'x8' deck... decent canvas to reinvent...

I just saw this.
So anyways, i didnt need it but i have it now.
That seems to be the story of my life... That attitude mixed with a "healthy" dose of dumpster diving and Craigslisting is how I wound up with the two 4' tall speaker towers flanking our TV, the vacuum tube 1960 Motorola stereo next to the couch, the $500 microwave in the kitchen, several working computers new enough to be reasonably usable, a stack of good sized hard drives, some stuff I keep meaning to sell, and a lot more stuff that mostly just sits around taking up space.
And my roommate just picked up a free large wooden console TV from 1981 last Thursday. That TV by itself takes up more floor space in the living room than the cabinet that our (also free) 48" flat screen TV is mounted to. It's currently sitting in front of the flat screen, which is alright since it has been used almost exclusively in the past few days. Dragnet, The Dukes of Hazzard, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Twilight Zone, and all of the older stuff like that that we usually watch really does look better on a good CRT TV than on a digital TV.

I'm not sure which is crazier, that a $500 consumer grade microwave exists in the first place or that someone had a like new one that worked perfectly and put it back in the Styrofoam in the original box just to throw it away.
