What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Oil & filter change. First time I've ever put 5,000 miles on the Ranger in just 2 months.

Ordered replacement filter for what I used, new oil filter and air filter for the snooperduty, which is due for oil change and new air filter, a case of brake clean and a few gallons of Rotella. Expensive day already. Grocery store later.

i have a 12k generator i bought 5 or 6 years ago in case we get hit with a bad hurricane and power goes down for a long period. it is multifuel but i have only ever run it on propane so the carb stays clean.

if it ever gets used in an emergency, it will most likely get run on gas and then i will have to worry about the carb later on.

i want to try and mess with a small gen to run on wood gas. that looks cool though it would probably be useless after a rainy hurricane since all the wood would be soaked

I've been kinda curious about that as well. Not enough to try it. Just curious non the less. Plus, the only small generator I would be willing to try it on is a two stroke. So, that kinda kills that idea.

Just took a long look at my Ranger then piled a lot of parts in the box - Now I gotta wait for our replacement short block to show up. Had to stay with the SBC combo solely for cost reasons but would give anything for a 390/427/428 FE to stuff in there.

Got a flush in, going to run it on distilled, drain, distilled, drain. Probably just the twice. When it's empty on the last one I'll put on some JB Weld, though it looks like the Bar Seal has stemmed the flow for now.

Found a 2.5l manual with 150k miles (2000). $4K. I may go get it next weekend.

Did some more work on my replacement cab, today was reconstruct the driver side core support mount. Didn't realize until today how much is going on in that little space, makes a lot more sense why they rot there... 3 layers of metal all piled up. Also managed to mash my hand when I was drilling the hole for the mount with a step drill as well (last operation before calling today's project done, haha). Still have all 10 fingers though so it was a win for today.

I finally got all the radios hitting the repeaters like they should. The DMR was a bit of a challenge but I got figured out.

Well… not the best day and not the worst.

Decided I needed a sort of moral boost so I decided to tackle some stuff on the Choptop. The oxygen sensor surprisingly didn’t look too bad even though it’s probably at least 5 years, if not 10 or more years old. It’s been running really rich and since the only time I remember changing it was when I did the 4.0 swap to begin with which was more than 10 years ago (dang I’m getting old). So, I figured for what it costs and the fact that it’s really not easy to check if the o2 sensor is doing its thing on the old system, might as well.

Anyway, put a wrench on it and out it came. I was fully expecting to have to use the torch. Maybe it’s not as old as I thought it was but whatever. Then I swapped the computer for the reman 4.0 manual transmission that I just got. Out of curiosity I popped the cover on the old computer and sure enough, all three capacitors popped and a couple resistors. That explains a lot. Took it for a little jaunt up to a buddy’s place and back tonight and man… oh it runs soooo good and no CEL. I have to re-learn how to drive this thing now that it’s acting how it should. For those about to tell me I should have fixed the old computer, no, it was for an auto transmission because it was all I could get at the time. Not that worried about it, I have what I need, it will make a nice core though.

Today I attacked the right side of my replacement cab core support and got that done, far less rotten than the left side. I can no longer delay the cowl repair, haha.

Between rain showers today I polished the headlights on my '97. Last year I finally ran out of polishing compound that came with the Harbor Freight kit where the rest of the kit was still fine but bought a bottle of Mothers Plastic polish from harbor freight (hey, used a 30% off for inside track that my coworker told me to...) and that stuff actually works pretty good... I skip steps and could likely get better results other ways but I just take the haze out with the 500 then 800 grit paper with soapy water for lube then buff with the foam pad and polishing compound... usually lasts a year...

Prepped a junk grade 8 bolt of the 1/2” variety (head was rusted to the point where I won’t re-use it for anything particularly important) and welded it into the fill plug that was stuck in dad’s 99 Ranger rear axle. I already had tried heat and rounded it out, so this was Plan C. Set my little Lincoln Weld Pack on C and about a 1.5 on the feed and poured some heat into it with the weld. Put a socket on it and it came right out. I was going to replace the plug but I might just clean up the weld a little and put it back.

Also took the Choptop for a spin to get stuff to patch my oops with the canvas top. I really need to figure out my vibration issues, this thing runs really good now…

Today I drove the '99, that's actually doing something since it isn't getting driven much right now. Drove it over to mom's to visit and do some stuff (in other thread) and took the time to pull the codes for the CEL that came on last drive. Looks like I need to hunt down a new cam position sensor. Can't call the number off the top of my head, but it was for cam sensor. Not first time I've seen the malfunction and every time it was after getting on it pretty hard, basically like acting like it was a run what you brung night at the drag strip. Probably need to see if I can search up a new(er) Motorcraft camshaft synchronizer. I don't remember if the one in it is the original 200k mile explorer unit, or if I bought an aftermarket replacement during the rebuild, but the former is likely to be worn and reports of the latter having loose tollerance.

I continued the generator stuff over in the other WDYDT thread. Will say that all of these dad had are gas only, but if I ever have to buy one it will probably be dual fuel for that very reason. Clean run on propane, but can be used with gas if necessary in emergency situations.

would give anything for a 390/427/428 FE to stuff in there.

Anything you say? :icon_confused:

:icon_idea:

Give me a good 7.3L Godzilla to put in my F-100 and I'll give you the FE out of it.

WIN - WIN scenario

You get the 390/427/428 FE you want* and I get the modern efficient and completely overkill drivetrain that I want.

Almost anything is a good improvement over those 18 year old factory speakers. Not too sure about the 8" tube sub, but if it works for you...

I'd probably go for a slim under seat unit, or build a box that creates a flat floor across the back seat area (in extended cab). Having said that I've never actually added a sub to anything, so take it for what it's worth. The new (to me) '21 F-150 might actually be the first. If I come across the parts for cheap, I might add the factory sub behind the rear seat.
