What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Last night I detonated a 7.5” rear. Carnage pics to come. Please stand by. Just got dropped at home for the tow bar and tools…

Oh wise ones….

(remember, there are no dumb questions, just dumb people)

97 Ranger 4.0 5spd 2WD question(s), B2/S1 O2 sensor.

Check engine light is on, went to AutoZone and got it coded, P0153, bank 2, sensor 1.

Is that driver side after the cat? It’s listed for the 97 ranger 4.0, but it doesn’t say which sensor it is, and I think there are three.

When I converted the single exhaust to dual exhausts, the shop had to put a universal cat on the driver side. We left the passenger side alone, except for plugging the crossover hole.

If I remember correctly, the shop guy removed the oxygen sensor on the driver side and reinstalled it on the new pipe.

Is this the correct sensor? None of parts listings use the bank/sensor lingo…

Is my warning light because I have a problem with the oxygen sensor, or is the warning light on because I split the exhaust and put in a universal cat?

BTW, the truck runs fine, I just hate looking at the light now that I fixed all the other dash lights, and I don’t need it to see where the dashboard is….

Any and all comments and information are welcome. I’m not a bad turn wrench, I just don’t have the equipment and industry knowledge you guys do….

The upstream sensors are the same except for the wire length, and iirc the drivers' side takes the longer pigtail - I always buy the one with the longer wires just to be safe. fwiw, I would never buy one of those on ebay, I would always go to rockauto and get a brand name one like Bosch so they have a chance to last.

First indication that all was not well was a sudden clunk and nothing but neutral. Second indication that all was not well was a fresh dent in the cover… made by something trying to escape the cover…

Ring gear and side gears aren’t really tore up. Pinion has som pretty decent damage. Carrier is scarred and has the start of a crack. Caught most of the chunks with the diff cover…

The chunks… lol

Possibly one of the most redneck temporary repairs ever. Wood dowel rod for a center pin to keep the axles in the side gears so the C-clips didn’t fall out so it could be flat towed because my F-150 is currently broke (slave cylinder and rear axle spring plates and U-bolts), Green Ranger has a bad hitch and it’s way too low plus it can’t haul the big trailer anyway, and the big trailer itself is a half hour or so from home at a family friends farm with a cab and frame on it. Haven’t popped the cover back off but apparently it worked to get it flat towed on a tow bar the 17 miles to a buddy’s place.

I believe that is a candidate for a salvage yard diff...
I’m probably just gonna scrap everything but the axle shafts and clutch plates. Everything else is basically toast other than the housing and I’m not sure I need to save that.

up grade time!
It’s been a plan for awhile. I actually have an Explorer 8.8 with disks at a family friends. I need to get gears and a locker for it though. It was a back burner issue for a few years. As long as things were working in the Choptop, it wasn’t a priority to collect parts. Now I need to find time and money to deal with it before September…

Yeah, Rustoleum won’t fix that either…

When I’m having fun like that with my fleet, sweet pea always tells me to sell it all and get a new car that runs.

I’m not considering it, but I thought I might offer it up to you as sound advice.

& BTW, she did not appreciate my T-shirt and she doesn’t want one…

In all fairness, that little 7.5” rear lasted a lot longer than it probably should have between 4.0, 35’s, extra clutches in the diff, and my particularly heavy right boot. I knew this day was likely to come sooner or later.

A new vehicle would be nice, but I’m not currently in a position to do that.

Me neither. If that changes, I’d be afraid of scratching it.

Pulled this turd out for a rebuild. 89 a4ld behind a 2.3 Was fine for years of abuse, tc got stuck locked so the previous owner just pulled plugs till it wasn’t. it became mine in 2016 ran it to near death in 2019 was doing a lot of sustained 70 mph highway driving and it was fine till I slowed down then it would puke fluid out the vent.

End of last summer I topped off the fluid with mercon V and within a mile it needed lots of rpm to engage.

The installers were nice enough to not tighten the bell bolts all to hell, I was able to get them all out, with just one wrench.

Dropped her off at the shop to get the AC fixed.(2001 XLT, 2.5, 5 speed). I thought it was a bad compressor. They said no, compressor ok but refrigerant leak under the dash, probably the AC evaporator. Do you have to pull the dash to access the evaporator ? Thanks ahead.
