What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Thanks for the tip, Eric B.! Never thought of using jackstands! Obvious solution when you think about it. Even though it was a wet day here, I scraped and sanded most of the heavy rust off, then rinsed the debris off with a garden garden hose. I think I will also remove the brackets and bolts, which will give me more room to access those nooks and crannies I couldn't reach before. Got any ideas on the best rust removers/reformers? Loctite makes one in a spray can, not sure it it really works.

I’ve used the Loctite spray, it works well and it’s easier to use.

More rain today, Tried out my space heater today, works awesome! only 1/2 way done on 2.2 ecotech water pump job, dont have all the o-rings I need, I could finish the job but Id rather not have a seal fail later , hard part is done, pump itself changed out. I do need to have more K1 on hand at home, it does go through the fuel

Thanks, Jazzer! I bought two cans at Menards today, but I'm still prepping the bumper, weather permitting. ( We got 3 inches of snow today!) Looking forward to seeing how well it works. The bumper is on the back porch under an awning.

racsan, I just got a 190k BTU version that's dual fuel so it can run on diesel, it sure does drink the fuel but it is amazing! Mine's running in the shop right now. I always heard they were stinky but it's not near as bad as I expected... I'd run kerosene but it's expensive and hard to find... although I've put about $30 in diesel through it since Friday I bet...

Been driving the '90 to work the last 2 days since it's been sketchy on the roads (I trust me, I don't trust anyone else...), of course I didn't get the air pressures very even for yesterday, it didn't drive very good on wet pavement with 7psi in the front passenger tire, 10psi in the drivers front and 13.5 in both rears... fixed that last night and it drove much better... Tonight I put the mud flaps back on so I hopefully don't get pulled over, here in a bit I'll go check the oil since I haven't (the light hasn't come on so that's a good sign...). I forget some of the odd road manners that thing has... first off that Yukon Grizzly locker works amazing, not clunky, 5th gear is growly for whatever reason (I think I read something about the M5OD doing that...) and the stupid throttle sticking right around idle is annoying when it either jumps open or jumps closed... The traction bar works great though, between on and off the throttle the whole rig moves instead of just the leaf springs wrapping, nice and solid but with the amount of body roll it didn't mess with my suspension travel obviously :)

RangerBilly,

Spray light coats and wait 15-20 minutes for all the rust to turn from brown to black. If any stays brown, hit it again. Wait until it’s thoroughly dry before topcoating and you’ll be fine.

Those space heaters with kerosene are smelly when you first start them. So I leave the door open and put the thing by the door for a few minutes until its all warmed up, and then close the door and put it where I want it. Makes a huge difference in the odor.

Got dumped on for about 4 hours yesterday, the ranger didn’t disappoint in a inch of slush topped with an inch and a half of snow. Had no weight in bed and an open diff so it didnt impress but i didnt have to touch the 4x4. The skinny AXTs we’re definitely a good call.

Late as usual posting this, but drove mine to Pennsylvania last Thursday to see my brother for Christmas and returned on Sunday. The weather was good and the truck ran great on this 600+ mile round trip. Got about 23 mpg on the way up and about 21 on return, which isn't bad for the V-6, especially with much of the trip at 70+ mph. The mpg difference was mostly because of traffic and doing some running around back home after return. Nice to be able to listen to CDs...

I-95 in Virginia between Richmond and Washington is quickly becoming jammed and unusable, no matter when you're on it. Weekends used to be all right. Not now. US 1 was clear sailing to Fredericksburg, where I caught US 17.

Went to town today to get the o-ring seals that werent in my water pump kit from autozone (hhr 2.2) As it turns out, even though the 2.2 ecotech is a very common motor, the thermostat housing assembly that bolts to the back of the box is chassis-specific. I noticed when I looked up a few videos for insight that there was some minor differences, all the inline videos I saw were for other gm front-drive chassis but similar sized cars. None of the local stores had it, autozone didn’t even have a listing for it, Napa could get me one, but would have to come from michigan or illinois. Oreilys could get it next day by 9 so I ordered it.
And whats really funny, 2 days ago I placed a order for ranger stuff through rockauto, it arrived about 30 min after I got back from town. Guess I park the escape outside & work on the ranger, it “should” be quick & easy. (I know, famous last words) Picked up 5 gal of K1 wow has that gone up, over $4 a gallon. I figured the car would be done before the stuff for the truck showed up, but then again I did pay for fed-ex shipping after something I ordered last year went to us mail default shipment & took over a month to get here.

I have that same kerosene heater. If the kero is dirty or you are using old heating oil or diesel it will still burn fine. Will need to take the spark plug out and clean it every once in a while.

I have a tank of old heating oil in my basement I’m working through.

Yeah, that's why I don't run Kerosene, I've never seen it at a pump so have to buy it in the store in the 2 gallon jugs for like $12...
