Question about the coilover conversion from torsion bars. I don't get that they say "All trucks, Superlifted or not, will require extended eyelets." But then say afterwards.
"Do not use the extended eyelets if doing this conversion on a stock height Ranger. They will reduce your up travel and give you a rough ride." This is off the coilover conversion post on the main Page. Im not really looking for a big lift just to level the truck ? Do I need the eyelets or not?

Hello from another Doug! I leveled the truck, & enjoy at least 3 inches of up travel, about 1 1/4 inches at the shock. Have a look at how I did it & let me know what Q's you have. I'd be glad to answer any, as everyone here will too! SWEET truck you have. Looks like Alaska.

You will require the extended eyelets only if you have 4wd. You need these to get the lower shock & spring away from the axle. Even with the smallest diameter shock (2.0 inch shock combined with 2.5 inch spring), links below.........

Ahh okey perfect so I will need the eyelets. What size coilover did you get? And how does it ride compared to the torsion bars? Currently I have the torsion bars cranked to the max And it ride horrible. Im looking to get atleast some better offroad performance so it doesnt feel like a car accident every little hole i go in haha. Pics are from Iceland where i live :)

Study the links I posted........the ride, night & day better. Not simply a bolt on mod, you'll need to add in some shock tower gussets as described in the link I posted.

Here is what shock I used, a Summit link, best price. New old stock (2 yr old) Now special order 28 days out.
FOX 2.0 shock body, coilover

Extended Length (in.):

Sure Doug, but if it can be instructional, it would be a good idea to have it here for others to read. Feel free to ask anything. While you're in there I would strongly sharing the experience for yourself by rebuilding the front end, CV axles included. Upper & lower ball joints, tie rod ends, & boots. That's all there is to it. Not much $$ there, but you'll be in there anyway. Take care. - MaicoDoug

Yep will do. ill be doing the conversion some time this summer so will be putting on fiberglass fenders and 37" tires. I'm wondering though about spring rate you have 800 pound springs most from what i've read recommends about 700-750 how do they feel the 800's ? do they feel stiff or are the 800's good ? I've also seen that the spring you are using is 10" long while the forum mentioned a 12" is that done to make it a 2" lift instead of the 4" with the 6.5" travel coilovers?

There is some math involved here.....a 10 inch spring is what Fox say is what that specific shock requires for a stock to 2 inch lift. Remember that this is with the stock track, that is the stock front axle width. I use this to pass other vehicles on tight trails. Mall crawlers normally dirty their drawers at the Starbucks. At 2" lift the CV angle is just about at max for on-road reliability and daily driving. Keeping this baby happy is not doing her too much wrong. She was born & bread as a Level II, so I have to respect her for what she is currently. In the future, when everything finally falls apart, it will be not from what I did to her.

The 800 lb spring rate; I can normally get full travel on back roads going the speed limit with the coilover adjustment at about 20-25% preload. The shock can't take a taller spring because the stack up height will limit the down travel. Currently I am enjoying about 5-6" of total travel. With about 2" - 3" of UP travel.

If you elect to go with a wider track, things start changing quickly. If I had to do it all over again, I would of gone with a Twin I Beam (TIB) front end. Kept the track width the same. NOTE: if you go wider, yes the spring rate should go down if the ratio of where the shock attaches to the lower A arm is further outside. Which will be less of a ratio. Remember the stock mounting point is halfway up to the hinge point. So with Apx. 3.5" of shock travel, the tire gets about twice that. Do the math. If you elect to go wider with longer A arms that mounting point will (may) change, and so does everything else. I don't know what the other forums are stating but what I'm doing is 100% stock, simply only a shock change with some shock tower gussets. As you can see I have no added front weight to speak of. I would try a 750 lb x 11" spring if I could find one, or go dual rate where the ring that separates the springs would take up the unused 1/2" on the shock body. Either way it's all in the math. Stack up height numbers are available at the Eibach website for any of their springs. You can take other's words to the trail, but what you can do for yourself with your own pad & pencil will decide. The best resource besides this website is Kartek & Fox Motorsports Tech desk. There was another desert racing forum called "too many trails, too many something, I forget.

Running 37s, well that decides stuff for you right there. Those can't really fit under the fender & so you'll most likely will be going with a wider track width, longer lower A arms, shock placement, longer CV axles. Sorry I'd love to discuss more however now this is where I dive out the window. When I relocate to Farmington-Durango, then is where I'll have my way with a TIB front & the TIG machine. The shocks will be the last thing added to a hoop!

Have fun!

Okey this is great information , I will be keeping the original A arms for now. I'll be getting fiberglass fenders so that will fit the the tire, and I'll see how much I will need to cut into the firewall but that is not new to me. I will make space for the tire. Looking at this I will probably be going for the 10" spring

Hey Dougie-
When you're ready- make a thread for your own truck in whatever section fits your rig. That way others can see your progress if you want. I know build threads can be a hassle, but along the way and when it's done the notations can be a real nice thing. I tend to just take pics during a break or a stopping spot. Even just before finishing up. The best part is having others sharing your frustration (if any). Look forward to reading your posts & seeing some pictures of that part of the moon! Watch out for the Norwegians.

Yep sounds good, I'll make a thread once I start building. for now I'm just gathering parts and actual build starts this summer. thanks for the info
