I have a 89 Ranger, 2.9, 4X4. I have a lifter or two that make a lot of noise after I have been driving on the highway. They don't make much noise at low RPM while driving around town. They make noise at startup but quiet down in about 5 minutes while sitting at idle. I added a quart on Rislone last week during a oil change and it hasn't helped yet. I was planning on removing the valve covers and resetting the valves. I will check to be sure the lifters are getting oiled when I have the covers removed. How much do the valve adjusters need to be turned after zero lash? Can the lifters be pulled without removing the heads?

Lifters cannot be pulled without head removal.

Why not?

All you have to do is remove the intake manifold, and loosen the rocker arms....pull the pushrod and yank the lifter.

later,
Dustin

You still missed an important step.....

The heads HAVE to be removed in order to pull the lifters out of the block.
