using a 5r55e trans in a 2wd application

ok so I have an 01 ranger 4.0 SOHC 4wd that is a donor vehicle for another project. The recipient project is 2wd though and I'm not interested in making it 4wd. What I'm reading seems to indicate that changing the tail shaft involves complete disassembly of the transmission. Any thoughts on just leaving the transfer case there and not hooking up the front shaft?

I suppose you could do it. I seem to remember the transmissions being a different length, requiring a different driveshaft. I believe the 4X4 version is shorter than the RWD version.

Also, the driveshafts hook up differently to the transmission. The RWD version slips in to the back of the transmission, acting like a slip yoke. The 4X4 version bolts the the transfer case at the back of the transmission.

2wd Bronco II's had a dummy transfer case, I suppose you could do that. I'd tear the transmission down, overhaul it and install a 2wd output shaft and extension housing, though. Or just find a 2wd transmission. Simpler is always better.
