US EPA fines tuners over emmissions

If this can be implemented without restricting the ability to modify a tune to match new parts, I'm okay with it.

It shouldn't be hard to do that.

This isn't about changing the engine's tune for more power or something like that. This is over deleting things like the EGR, the catalyst monitor/DPF parameter, or the DEF system from the computer because the owner "doesn't feel like dealing with them".

Frankly I do see the problem with them getting slammed for allowing it with their tunes. It rises to the level of tampering, and I often refused to inspect diesels that had those modifications made, if I could prove it, because while diesels aren't subject to PA's emissions program, they are still subject to the enhanced inspection which says we have to look to make sure all factory equipped control devices are present and "appear to be functional".

Agreed with all of that. Sounds like we're on the same page across the board on this one.

Yeah. The article specifically mentioned "defeat devices" a few times. I am pretty sure retuning for a stroker kit, or a performance cam, or other CAA compliant changes will still be fine, as long as it leaves the emissions control software/devices intact.

They have been getting away with it or years by marketing this stuff as "For off-road use only", but we all know that everyone who bought these devices was doing it to either avoid repairing a flawed, or perceived flawed, system, or because they think the thing they are deleting is robbing power, fuel economy or both.
