That can't be a unicorn, I have seen way way too many 89-92 rangers in the 3 yards I hit up (2 of em I only went to once) in the process of R&R-ing my ride to get it all setup for paint and back on the road... there has to be several yards between you and I with plenty of donors. All but one single one was extend cab 6' bed (I needed B pillar trim from a regular cab, I took crystal blue and painted it tan from the one and only.)

@MaD I don't remember if you ever gave your city in another thread, but pull-n-save is a high volume so you would have to either call em or go in often but I bet they will see plenty of rangers in and out... I watched one of Sarah-N-Tuned videos where she was working on her gram's 3rd gen and went to THAT yard - saw 1st gens, 2nd gens and a few 3rd gens and it was not a tiny yard.

I do go there sometimes but not so much. Their fees are high. They drill holes into the tanks. Every ranger they get is trashed too, actually almost every vehicle in there is. Idk where they're getting their vehicles lol. I check almost daily their website and pull a part and go ASAP when they get a ranger.

...I’m currently after a D-35 front diff assembly with 4.10 or 4.56 gears (or just the ring and pinion but I really don’t want to mess with gears). A set of 4.88 would be really nice but those weren’t a factory option.

I didn't realize the D35 could be pulled "center section" or "3rd member" + pinion only but while reviewing basic anatomy I found this thread:

ok I went to pick in pull for an axle and the explorer that i got it from had the third member removed, the axle just slid right out. but i dont think its that easy to install right? i mean do i have to mess with the third member to remove the axle?

So looking at the price sheet a "3rd member" is $115, and a complete axle is $115.

If the center section is 44# and the full axle is ~127#

I assume to keep shipping even half reasonable you want the 3rd member + pinion only.. do you want all the races and shims for the pinion?

also didn't realize there was a hybrid, and I assume that is a hard pass you want a real D35 not a hybrid:

Is this a firm order or is this a find it and then message you?

Everyone else: it sounded like either there was no chance (skid plate) or spec/ just look to see, do I have that right? Is anyone else making a solid order?

(I got my truck back from the glass shop a couple hours ago and can finally plan life again - they had to hang on to it while ordering a 2nd glass cause the first was not right.. Tomorrow is my plan)

So… by 3rd member, I’m talking the whole pumpkin/center chunk/whatever you want to call it. You have to pull at least one, if not both axle shafts (the inner shaft on the passenger side is c-clip retained in the diff, but the rest are not C-clipped), plus all of the bolts that hold it to the beam (10 on the front and a pinch bolt by the drivers side radius arm). Also the front driveshaft is in the way. That whole chunk that would come out at that point is what I’m after, short of pulling just the ring and pinion out and sending that, the chunk would be the most easy to ship, but I’m betting it weighs a good 30# or so and that may not be cost effective to ship.

I have 4 complete D-28 axles here and a D-28/35 hybrid axle. I’m finding myself reluctant to continue trying to keep a D-28 alive because parts are getting scarce and they aren’t a very strong axle to begin with. The hybrid that I have is my back-up plan because that would allow me to use parts I already have to get the truck on the road and then I would just have to swap the center chunk out with the D-35 stub shaft on the passenger side and the drivers side shaft and I’d have a true D-35. But I really don’t want to go that route if I can find a D-35 before I get to that project. So, long explanation, but yes, you are correct, I’m not interested in anything but a true D-35 chunk. And probably a set of axle shafts for it, lol. There is aftermarket support for the true D-35.

I’m not going to make it an order. At the moment, I don’t have the cash and to be honest, probably won’t until probably towards February. But if you would happen to find one, let me know and I’ll see what I can make happen. I’m going to start poking around junkyards soon here, building a list, I know what was in a bunch of the yards the last time I made my rounds, but it’s been long enough that I might find some stuff. I may possibly make a run to one yard on Monday. They’re doing a wheelbarrow sale, everything you can put in a wheelbarrow and push out, $80. Their inventory says they should have about 4 possibles for the front axle (they inventory nothing beyond year/make/model/color so I actually have to go and check the tags myself). Weatherman is calling for rain, I’m hoping for no rain or not rain when I go/if I go. If they would have what I’m after, I’ll throw the entire axle in a wheelbarrow. Wonder if I could cart out a couple Superduty axles like that…

And yeah at $115 before shipping if you could get it for $80 then by all means.

That said, 'tis the season to spend money on other people so I get it... plus I don't foresee a D35 as being hard to find for me. I don't plan on going to the yard at all in Jan/Feb or really much left of Dec after this. Temperature was 60 and forecast is for mid 50's.... after this week it will be 30 degrees all the time till 1st week of March.

This yard has hoists scattered around, so I’d use that to lift the axle into a wheelbarrow, I’m not as young as I used to be either.

I thought that was kind of crazy they want as much for the chunk as they do for the whole axle.

D-35’s aren’t super hard to find. Finding the desired gear ratio can be. For whatever strange reason, there’s a lot of 3.08, 3.27, 3.55 and 3.73 gears around here. 3.73 is actually a little on the more rare side. 4.10 is hard to find in anything older than a 98 around here and although they were supposed to exist, 4.56 is a ratio I have yet to find. Being that nothing is flat around here, you would think deeper gears would be more popular, but no. I’m pretty sure that 4.10 gears are going to be what I want, but if I can get something deeper like 4.56 or 4.88, I’d put those in the Choptop and use the 4.10s out of that for my Eddie Bauer.

I figured "the right gear ratio" was the issue... when I put the 9" under my '48 you couldn't find a 3.50 or 3.75 to save your life. (I settled for a 3.0 which was a mistake.. still on the lookout for a '70-'72 9" w/ 3.75 but it works so haven't been killing myself to hurry that project at all).

That price also is for rear axles, a lot of times a guy will go in and ask and they have better pricing for unlisted parts. I'll ask when I get there (either today or tuesday)

well I have good and bad news for 1st gen skid plate... the one and only longbed 1st gen in the close yard has a skidplate... it has a hole in it... it looks like the gas thank threw a rod and grenaded out the bottom - pushed outwards not inwards... a guy could hammer it back together and weld a little tiny patch where the petals all come together.


Since the yard knows me pretty well now they also said they got a ranger in 3 hours before I got there, which with Colorado state rules it will be in the yard next saturday (it's the law, they have to let it sit for 7 days in case someone shows up saying it is stolen or something) No clue if it is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc - just a "old ranger"

And yes I can revoke something I said probably not - explorers are a dime a dozen (every woman in this state wants to be in a big SUV so they don't get hurt in a wreck against all the other big SUV's)..... there is definitely some 4.0 OHV parts (intakes) if a guy just remembers to quit lookin at rangers and go look at exploders.

Seems like an odd sort of damage to a gas tank skid plate…

So, first gen Explorers 91-94, will have a D-35 and 8.8” which work for me as well.

Which reminds me, I need a 4.0 OHV with a manual transmission computer for an early (OBD1) Ranger/Explorer… I’m running an auto trans computer in my Choptop and it’s not exactly happy about that. I have a persistent high idle and a persistent CEL because it doesn’t “see” the transmission (shift and O/D lockup error codes).
