Two sides but...local parts stores are dying for a reason

I have had O'Reilly's approximately price match Rockauto + guestimated shipping. I try not to abuse it but it is nice in a crutch.

I tried to set up a business account at O’Reilly (I do have a business and fleet vehicles) and I’m pretty sure I got denied because I don’t really repair vehicles. The manager stopped by my office and had a ton of questions and acted really skeptical that I needed an account. It was weird and I never heard back from him. I might try to get a business account at AutoZone instead.
There’s no O’Reilly close enough to me to try, the closest is like 20 miles south of me. I have Autozone, three Advance, Napa and a handful of independent stores less than 10 miles from me. As it happened, I was in Autozone complaining to the commercial manager that I knew about the counter help and he was like, just get a commercial account. I hadn’t walked into the store intending to do that and I wasn’t going to see if somewhere else would offer me an account at that point so that’s how I ended up with one there.

The chain parts stores model is charging exorbitant prices with usually a lifetime warranty for the Chinese junk they sell. That's an artificial value for most people because they only keep their car for a few years. Chain parts stores have enormous overhead like crazy high insurance rates, rent, utilities and labor. Americans used to demand durability, quality and value in the products they bought. That's long since gone and never coming back.

I always have luck with Parks Auto Parts and Carquest if you can still find one, outside of those I just get everything online anymore

We lost my local choice for auto parts awhile back. Advance Auto... the lady that managed the place was probably the best parts person I've seen here in Illinois. Wish I knew where she went...

I can't hardly deal with the people behind the counters at the rest of them. I will never spend another dollar in my local Autozone... had a tiff with the manager one day and walked out with all my stuff I needed sitting on the counter.

I don't buy enough for a business account but I would pray the help would be better then the normal front counter help.

So if I need something in a pinch... it's O'Reilly. I try hard to just be my own parts guy and order online.

I bought a Motorcraft cap and rotor from Amazon for the Bronco II. I'm pretty sure it was a scam after opening the box. Just thin low quality stuff. I couldn't bring myself to install it. It will go in the travel box and be the "emergency " part if needed. I just got another cap and rotor that was Summit branded. Nice thick materials and copper electrodes. No idea if its better... but I'll feel better about it.

Nobody these days understands quality it seems, they just care about the cheapest price. So the market is flooded with cheap crap made by slave labor in other countries.

Add in that there are big companies buying out parts manufacturers and dissolving them which only compounds the problem.

Unfortunately the online stuff is often full of fake parts anymore. Parts are becoming a real crap shoot no matter where you get it

I absolutely agree. To further support your point Parks sold me three bad ICM's before they sold me one that would work. They were all used I figure, none of them were in the plastic i was used to seeing and didn't come with any dielectric grease except the last which is what worked.

Here you just ring the manager's phone first.

If he is on the phone or otherwise incapacitated you go to the lagoon behind the front counter.

When I was at Chrysler and could easily arm myself with OE numbers it wasn't so bad. They would bumble around, I ask for their number to confirm on their website and if it looked right "how soon can you get one?"

When I was in ag parts with seal dimensions... buckle up because it is going to be a wild ride.

I’ve had the same kind of experience but with Advance. I’ve had a few go-rounds with Autozone too. Neither of them really keeps most of their employees so usually after a couple years it’s mostly all new people.

Getting a commercial account was the best move I made, the help is usually way better because they can’t afford to make commercial customers mad. I’ve even walked into other Autozone’s and as soon as I say I have a commercial account, even the counter help perks up if I’m outside of normal commercial hours.

There’s no minimum purchase for the commercial side of Autozone, but the more you spend per month, the bigger discount you get.

It’s definitely not a move for everyone, but I usually turn over enough mechanical work to be worth it. Plus when there’s a problem I pick up the phone and it gets handled. For me, that’s convenient.

Yup the turnover is crazy, because the pay is a joke. I used to work for VatoZone for a few years part-time. Their Z Net computer system is a joke. I'd find nothing on there by doing the year, make and model BS. I'd Google the part needed, find some alternative part numbers for it and put those into the Z Net garbage and usually something would pop up, usually a Cardone or Dorman part.

Commercial accounts get free parts delivery as well. You do have to deal with the annoying visits by the managers trying to get you to buy more. There's a lot of pressure to make sales numbers.

The manager of this Autozone doesn’t harass anyone. He has, quite consistently, turned out sales numbers far in excess of the previous manager simply by doing his job well. He will gladly go to great lengths to find and get parts for anyone and he treats the smallest customer with the same respect as the big ones. He also knows what is a reasonable price and what isn’t and makes the appropriate adjustments. Don’t know what I will do when he eventually retires, lol. His sales numbers are consistently larger in one day than an entire week of sales back when I worked there so corporate doesn’t bother him too much.

Managers would come around once in awhile with a flier and free trinkets and BS for a bit and then be on their way. Nothing really high stress or anything

Dang I didn't know the managers will stop by. I really don't want them doing that. It was awkward enough when the guy stopped by out of the blue and then the secretaries were asking why I need an account there.

Guess I'll just keep buying stuff from RockAuto. I have gotten the local places to match them or Amazon a few times but I decided a while back that it's just not worth the time or hassle for a "maybe this time but not next time." 95% of the time I know days or weeks in advance of needing parts so waiting a week for stuff to ship is not a big deal.

The store in Florida I worked at had either the commercial or store manager stop by like once every 3 months or so. I think the district manager might visit occasionally as well. But our district manager was an ass and he eventually quit and got in to pet cremations.
