Twister 85 B2 Build

Time to look everything up and start seeing what can hook up.

It seems that most say that any clutch line from a ranger should work as long as that ranger had a manual with an internal slave. But i also found a post by AllanD that gives a bit more of a break down on the clutch lines and connecters that says if you mix and match you will most likely get unfavorable results :annoyed:

Here is the post found from him
What COLOR is the coupler on the end of the clutch line that you are trying to connect to the slave cylinder?

And what color is the coupler on the slave cylinder you are using?

There are TWO different RANGER mastrer cylinders, the 1983-92 Clutch master works with all, clutch slave cylinders that have the Black (fades to purple) or Red coupler. (this is the ALUMINUM slave cylinder)

IF the slave cylinder you have is the glass reinforced nylon plastic (Dupont trade name "Delrin") it will have a Gold/Yellow color and these require the matching master cylinder.
The Master you probably need was only used in Rangers and
Explorers 1993-94, and does not mount directly to the firewall,
it mounts via a metal mounting cup that it twist locks into.

the early master cylinder has an integral mounting flange made out of the same glass reinforced plastic the rest of the master is made out of.

While you can swap the lines this can cause problems, the early big bore
master cylinder used with the late "plastic" slave gives you a heavy pedal and quick clutch activation, but actually pushing the pedal to the floor can stress the firewall to the breaking point.

Doing the mismatch the other way results in a clutch that often cannot be bled properly and is hard to completely release.

as a side note the 1995-up uses a completely different master cylinder that doesn't mount to the firewall at all but directly to an ear on the pedal bracket.

Mine didn't have a color that i remember. Now i do recall my master came from an 85 internal tk5 Trans from when i did the 2.8 swap on my truck because it was the only bell housing i could find since my Trans originally had a 2.3 on it. Now it is hooked to an external 84 slave, plugged and played.

Best thing is to look up the slave, masters, etc... from all the vehicles you know of that have done this kind of thing on AutoZone or wherever and look at what the easiest way to do this would be. If a 95+ setup will fit on your vehicle, i would do that our even if there is a difference in the fullsize master that you got your trans out of and a rangers. When i get time, i will be doing the same research.

Went to u pull it today, picked up a clutch line from a 91 and a 93, a kind visor and a tail end of a t case that I might be able to use to convert the one I have to use a speedo gear instead if a weird sensor. Got it all for about $40

Sent from, wait how did this get here?

Got the speedometer gear ordered from the dealership, was actually cheaper than buying it from somewhere else surprisingly. People say I need a clutch master cylinder with a 7/8" bore to help with the longer clutch fingers on the full-size clutch components. The only one I can find is a dorman brand one. Has anyone used this brand of clutch components? I know they make tons of parts but i have never used them. I also need a slave cylinder, does anyone have a reccomemndation on brand? I don't wanna get it all together and bleed to have it leak or go out in 20 miles.

My ranger master pushes my clutch just fine. At first it released/grabbed right off the floor but after a bit of driving, it's mid pedal everything happens.

What year truck is it from? I got a master cylinder from an 84 B2 I never used sitting in my garage, if I could just use that one that would be fantastic, I've just read a bunch of people have problems with the smaller bore masters.

Mine is from an 85 internal clutch but I don't think there is a difference in the masters. Look up the two parts and see if there is a difference.

Bought a 3in body lift from lil_blue_Ford, he said he is going to ship it Monday. When that gets here I am going to put that on along with a new set of body mount bushing I got when I bought by second B2. Also got the speedo gear for by t case, going to finish that this weekend. Got to take my time with it so I don't mess it up lol. After all that I am going to start making some real progress with this :D

Went to the junkyard and found the tail shaft from a 98 f150, one that uses the gear driven speedo sensor. Got the gear as mention before for $10. I got the t case almost finished, just need to cut a very shallow hole for a small ball for the gear to slide over.

I had to cut off this ring

Then slide the new gear into place, it have to cut a very small divit to house a ball bear that the gear slides over.

I put the sensor from my bronco, and it fits and turns great :headbang:

That would make a great tech article IMO. :icon_thumby:

I do agree.

Ok so i need to drill a small recess to house a small bearing ball, i have measured where i think it should go but i am having a hard time starting the hole. I have bought two different center punches, a cheapy auto one from harbor freight and a nicer one from Ace. Both have rounded off and left no mark on the output shaft, plus the one from ace, the first time i hit it with a hammer a piece flew off and embedded itself in my arm :icon_surprised::annoyed::sad:

2nd, you guys got any tips on getting the old body mount bolts out, i got one out ok, but the other ones wouldn't budge even with a 4 foot breaker bar :shok:
