Turns over, won't start

Hello all,

Recently, my truck has been occasionally failing to start after being shut off, or stalled (through my own fault, not the truck's). She has never died while driving and runs well.

When she does fail to start, she'll turn over with no trouble, but not even catch. It only happens after I've been driving around, and then only happens 10% of the time or so. I've got air, though I'm tossing a p0171 code, though I recently changed the air filter. Plugs and wires are new, coils are not. Schrader valve is pressurized, though I haven't had the opportunity to actually use a gauge.

Any thoughts? My father suggested the camshaft or crankshaft position sensor, but it runs well, when it runs.

Any suggestions are appreciated, If I can provide additional info, let me know. Truck is a 1997 2.3 XL.

Check these first. From the Chilton manual.

Trouble Code Conditions:
Engine started, engine running at cruise speed for 3 to 4 minutes, and the PCM detected the Bank 1 Adaptive Fuel Control System reached its rich correction limit (a lean A/F condition).

Possible Causes:

Air leaks after the MAF sensor, or leaks in the PCV system

Exhaust leaks before or near where the HO2S is mounted

Fuel injector(s) restricted or not supplying enough fuel

Fuel pump not supplying enough fuel during high fuel demand conditions

Leaking EGR gasket, or leaking EGR valve diaphragm

MAF sensor dirty (causes PCM to underestimate airflow)

Vehicle running out of fuel or engine oil dip stick not seated

I would cut the search for the problem in half by getting a can of Starting Fluid.
Next time it doesn't start spray some in the intake.

If it starts then you have a fuel problem.
If it doesn't start then it is a spark problem.

Crank position sensor being active tells the engine computer to turn on spark and fuel injectors, if it fails you will get a no start, but these usually fail completely, not intermittent, a loose or bad wire to this sensor could show up as intermittent.

camshaft sensor going bad won't cause a no start.

Because it only occurs on a warm engine I would lean towards a no spark problem, cracked coil would most likely only cause a problem when warmed up.

p0171 lean code could be related, or might not be, stuck or dirty EGR valve could cause a no start but engine would run bad all the time

Next time it does it, my suggestion would be to hold it wide open then hit the key, if it starts then you have leeaking injectors. My car after it warms up (due to modifications) wont start because it gets too much fuel and i have to hold it wide open to get it to clear out the excess fuel. If that doesnt work, try the starting fluid.
