isn't the airbag light on? how do you pass inspection?

ya mines the same on my 96 theirs no passenger air bag and makes an awesome hiding spot or you can put audio equipment in there!

Remove the air bag light.

A lot of places don't have any inspections or it's a purpose built offroad only rig.

And to stop the beeping remove the rest of the airbag system (it'll beep if the light is burned out/removed).

Somebody relocated his under hood fuse box behind the pass. air bag cover.

I asked this a while back in a different thread. Didn't get any response on it though. It would be cool... there's nothing there...I'm sure hardly any 96-97 rangers came with a passenger air bag. I just have a fake cover there too. It'd be great to have a second glove box. I think I'm gonna look more into doing it.

a guy here locally has a monitor there hooked up to his head unit.. for playing dvd's and such. pretty cool, a little to flashy for me.. but cool none the less.

Packing heat

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1mdRdgdSQw&feature=related just a thought? I love this truck and if you carry it would make one sweet hiding spot, nobody would ever rip the cover off an airbag :icon_hornsup:

but seriously i think if you took some actuators or maybe the hardware off the ashtray you could make a second glove box.... but a push button slide out box for a piece would be seriously cool

*warning if anyone does this and gets arrested its not my fault* :dunno:

ya mine is just empty my thought is that the hard part is making the box to go in there first of all cuz it looks like they have some junk in there to work around, so im guesing you would have to make some custom fiberglass inner box then the second issue is the hinge for it to open cus it has almost no clearance around it. I am thinking maybe have it slide out on an actuator?

You have any pics of what it looks like behind there?

I feel making a metal box to slide and bolt in (maybe leave it open if you can make it look good), then hinge the cover on there could be cool.

This might be a project for me tomorrow.

If I have done my research correctly. 1997 was the first year that passenger airbags were required, up until then they were an option, only the drivers side was required.

Technically, a 1997 should always have an airbag there. but who knows what previous owners decided to do, or if the truck has been in an accident. Any number of things.

I know that driver airbags were available in the 1995 Ranger. 1996 was the first year for optional pass. airbags. I thought 1997 was the last year for optional pass. airbag.
I thought it was 1998 that was the first year Rangers had both standard. 1998 was the year that the US FMVSS made dual front airbags manditory.

http://www.s54b32.com/ranger/DSC03736.JPG This isnt mine but another guys 97, its what gave me the idea. i have felt up there and have not felt anything there. also most airbag locations have the logo on them so you know its back there and mine has no such logo.

I think for 97s it was still optional. where i would have an airbag, there's a hook up point but nothing. It looks like it was left that way by the factory

Wow, Rangers were way behind with airbags, the Taurus got a driver's airbag standard starting in 1990, pass. was made opt in 92, std in 94. I thought 94 is when all vehicles were required to have both, but I guess that's not true, or somehow automakers got around it.
