turning airbag into storage???

I have a drivers bag just no passenger... *WARNING don't die in my tuck, its messy*

Wow, Rangers were way behind with airbags, the Taurus got a driver's airbag standard starting in 1990, pass. was made opt in 92, std in 94. I thought 94 is when all vehicles were required to have both, but I guess that's not true, or somehow automakers got around it.

In 1989 vehicles were supposed to have a supplemental restraint system...which could be either airbag or automatic seatbelt. Pickup trucks are always behind the times. ABS, SRS w/e haha

passenger vehicles may have been required in 94 BUT pickup trucks get different classifications. they have always been a few years behind cars when it comes to safety equipment. thats also why in some states (texas for example) you can get a "truck" plate or regular plates for a truck depending on the situation

I owned 96, 97 and 98 Ranger's and the 96 and 97 both did not have Passenger airbags, but in 1998 passenger air bags were made standard!

...and high mount a.k.a. 3rd brake lights! WAAAAY behind with those, 1986 all cars had to have one, Rangers didn't get them until 1993. Truck plates I guess are any vehicle that only has the 2 front seats, i.e. cargo vans get Truck plates.

I had a 95 without the pass airbag and I put a small amp for my door speakers in there. The amp got a little hot though because of no air flow. A small fan put in there would work great though.

So anyone ever find how to get the cover off? Make it into a second glove box? I'm seriously interested in this! I had just thought this the other day lol, just never got around to checking how much space is back there.

It just has snap clips to hold it in place, mine doesn't have a P-side airbag either. I mounted a junction box/terminal panel there and mounted the box for my CB there as well.

To remove the cover use a stiff plastic pry bar or putty knife such tool. I popped mine out and was considering putting my control system for my rear vision camera system in there. Still in R&D though.
To make a 2nd glove box, the fake door will need to have the retainer clips removed so door can open and close. For a hinge, why not use one from a stock glove box along with the latch or a push to release magnet style.

The issue with making it a glove box is all in the hinging of it... i have came up with 2 solutions for mine. 1. use either the stock clips or something similar and attach one of the oh-S**t bars like is on the roof to the front of it, or maybe a nice fiberglass one, this way when you want to open it you just grab the handle and pull it off. 2, use a euro hinge off of a kitchen cabinet so it pulls back flush when you close it but it will be difficult to line this up perfect

i thought about cutting off the stock tabs adding maybe a hinge on the bottom and using one of those push to release latches so that it looks stock. How would i go about making the inside like a glove box though? Fiberglass sounds like a pain in the azz lol.

you can use mdf and wrap it but nothing will fit and look as good as glass

Just had a thought come to me. I dont know if I even like the idea, but if someone does, go right ahead.

You could put a small handle on the cover, build an enclosure in the empty space behind it that is attatched to the cover and give it sliders or guides like a drawer. Maybe roll out slightly downward so you can reach in? Idk whatever you do, put a latch on it so the beefcake ranger power doesnt leave someone with drawer markes on their face.

idk wtf i was thinking

i was thinking about removing the bag and fitting the cover with velcro lol.
